Metadata is information that is digitally attached to your images and can help identify key information. This data makes it easier for you to search for your images and helps tell the story of the photo. Photo organizing software allows you to embed this information into your image files. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Tackle your digital photo collection first. Your images may be at greater risk than your printed photo collection if you dont have sufficient backups in place. You will also be creating a home for your soon-to-be scanned photos. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Preparing a family timeline aids in the sorting process as you begin to tackle your photo and video collection. Begin by plotting significant milestones like marriage or birth dates. Then add school years, moves, vacations, and other details. #SaveYourPhotos2020

What needs to be tackled first? Do you have photos to share for a milestone birthday? Are some in poor condition and need to be scanned before they deteriorate further? Use this information and your inventory to create a plan for organizing and digitizing. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Once you have finished gathering your items and placed like items together, take an inventory. For example: 6 photo albums, 4 shoeboxes of photos and letters, 10 photo CDs, 3 slide carousels, etc. This is the first step in managing your project. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Use a flatbed scanner for 2-D artwork and snap photos of oversize, 3- D, or glitter-covered masterpieces. Even better, record your child talking about a project while holding the artwork. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Need help dating photos? Family documents and letters contain dates and information that may unlock some mysteries. Use context clues in photos such as signs, wall calendars, or birthday candles. Even the size, markings, or type of photos can be informative. #SaveYourPhotos2020

Time is wreaking havoc on the audio and video quality of your old home movies. Take them to a trusted professional for conversion to digital files. #SaveYourPhotos2020

What back up strategy do you have in place?

Make appointments with yourself to work on your photo project. Setting mini goals is helpful too. Knowing that you have a block of time set aside helps to keep you on track for the day.

Start with a simple folder structure, this gives you one place to look for your photos. Dont mix any other files into your folder structure.

Always do a back up before you begin your organizing project. Mistakes can happen, but its nice to know you can go back and recover your photos.

Save Your Photos Day 4: Take A Photo Inventory How many photos do you have in your digital collection? What about your print collection? What about film, video ...and other memorabilia? Its time to take a photo inventory. Assess the mess. Its time to take a photo inventory! You need to know how many photos you have so you can plan the scope of your project and the time involved. Digital Photo Inventory- Taking a count of your digital photos can be done in a few clicks. Be sure to look for various formats for digital photos such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, and Raw. Print Photo Inventory - Printed photos are a little less exact. Professional photo organizers measure photos or weigh them when estimating. A one-inch stack of photos is approximately 100 pictures. This number may be less if you are working with older photos which may have a thicker backing. If you weigh boxes of photos, 6-7 pounds is the equivalent of 1000-1200 photos. Dont forget your slides. A circular slide carousel holds either 80 or 140 slides. If you are unsure about the slides you have, you can check out this rare slide guide. Home Movie Inventory - When counting your home movie collection, you will find it helpful to count the various film and video formats. Not sure how to determine the formats? Scrolling through some old photos, I found this one of my niece. She is all dressed up and ready to celebrate my Great Aunts 100 birthday. Enjoy the celebrations and the first long weekend of the summer. Make and capture some memories!
