Another small-scale experiment this year -- meat birds. Picked up our 12 rustic rangers today and I'm excited to get them from the brooder to the pasture and watch them grow. They sure are cute little fluffy butts right now! . . . #chicks #rusticrangers #tryingnewthings #raisingourownfood #pasturedpoultry #meatchickens #fluffybutts #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Meet Poppy! Poppy is a beautiful red Mangalitsa gilt from our friends at Springridge Farm. We are making some changes and bringing in some fresh bloodlines. Poppy is a sweet and friendly girl, and we are so happy to have her here on our farm! @springridgefarm1 . . . #mangalitsa #redmangalitsa #mangalitsapiglet #springridgefarm1 #lovemymangas #pasturedpigs #raisednaturally #noconfinement #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Our "new" upcycled garden fence. I do not have a green thumb but I am going to try a few things -- some tomatoes and cucumbers and peas -- because I hate admitting defeat! . . . #garden #gardenfence #palletfence #upcycle #tryingtogarden #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50

We're making a few changes on the farm. First up, we have found a wonderful new home for our buck Levi and purchased 2 new bucks. Apollo is our new registered Nigerian Dwarf buck. He is a sweet boy with gorgeous colouring and he's polled which is pretty great. Zeus is our handsome new Mini Nubian buck and he comes to us all the way from Nova Scotia. We will breed him to mini Nubian does that we are retaining this year! Both boys are doing well and enjoying these first warm days of spring! @hautegoat @tipsytoadgrove . . . #newbucksonthefarm #nigeriandwarf #nigeriandwarfbuck #mininubian #mininubianbuck #newboys #goats #goatstudmuffins #hautegoat #tipsytoadgrove #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

***BUCKLING HAS BEEN SPOKEN FOR*** Our only mini Nubian buckling this year. This beautiful boy will be ready for a new home in mid-June. Disbudded and vaccinated. Both dam and sire are registered. Clean, tested herd. Bethany, Ontario.

Found a rogue hen while doing afternoon chores. Our Swedish Flower hen thought maybe the goat shed was a good place to hang out. I'm pretty selfie-challenged but she was patient with me

I wanted to show off our new goat feeder. Eva wanted me to pay attention to her! The rest of the goats are inside the shed complaining about the cold, lol. . . . #goats #nubiangoats #goatantics #goatfeeder #wintergoats #winterfarming #winteronthefarm #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Moving and loading pigs in winter presents a whole host of logistical challenges. Day one involved plowing the field so the pickup wouldn't get stuck and then moving the trailer in position. Day 2 we put rubber mats, straw and hay in the trailer and then worked on moving 2 pigs from 2 different pens. Oscar the kunekune followed a bucket down without too much problem but Pumbaa was having no part of leaving his herd. Finally enclosed him in a pig panel and got him down the all...ey. Thank goodness we got them in as our processing date was moved up a day! Thanks @farmersbutchershop for the heads up! #movingpigs #pasturedpigs #pasturedpork #noconfinement #raisednaturally #farmfreshfood #raisingourownfood #localfood #farmersbutchershop #alwaysanadventure #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Our motley crew of laying ladies and their three men. Free ranging is pretty minimal at this time of year, but these chickens get lots of mealworms as treats and goodies in their soaked feed including sunflower seeds and alfalfa pellets. . . . #freerangechickens #chickensinthesnow #freerangeeggs #barnyardflock #barnyardmix #layinghens #raisingourownfood #localfood #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Successfully moved all the girls and barrows (except for one stubborn sow) into their winter pen. Excited that our "alley" worked! They have a nice new shelter, 2 port-a-huts put together with an old stall mat. Should be nice and cozy! Tomorrow, after a day without food, I hope the sow will be motivated to make the journey up to her herd! . . . #pasturedpigs #pasturedpork #mangalitsa #movingpigs #winterpens #raisednaturally #farmfreshfood #raisingourownfood #localfood #pigfarmer #farmher #farmlifeisthebestlife #farmlifeinCanada #ontariofarmers #kawarthalakes #Peterborough #farmlife #farmingat50 #flying_pig_farm

Another fabulous story of a pig and the war... Thanks to the Oxford Sandy and Black Pig Group - Registered Charity Number 1190469 King Neptune, the World War II Fundraiser... A pig named Parker Neptune was born on Sherman Boner's farm in southern Illinois in 1942. Don C. Lingle, a Navy recruiter, acquired the pig and renamed him King Neptune. Lingle collaborated with auctioneer L. Oard Sitter to auction the pig for war bonds. The auctioneer dressed the pig in a Navy blanket as a gimmick. Bidders pledged $11,200 in war bonds for various parts of the pig by the time the auction was overthen the buyers donated the pig back to be auctioned off again! It was all in the spirit of supporting the war effort. King Neptune gained local fame through the stunt, and was auctioned off againfor $50,000. And again, for half a million. As word spread, King Neptune was driven from town to town, selling war bonds and escaping the butcher's cleaver every time. He arrived at auction dressed in a Navy blanket, a crown, and jewelry befitting his regal name. At least once, his squeal was auctioned, and a single bristle was sold for $500. The governor of Illinois once bid a million dollars on the pig on behalf of the state. Before the end of World War II, King Neptune had raised $19 millionequivalent to over $200 million today. In 1946, Lingle saved King Neptune from a planned trip to the slaughterhouse and arranged for him to retire to the farm of Ernest Goddard in Illinois. There he lived until his death of pneumonia in 1950. King Neptune was buried with military honors, and a memorial was erected in his memory. I am reposting this fabulous story from The Oxford Sandy and Black Pig Group - Registered Charity Number 1190469 A PIG THAT SERVED IN TWO WORLD WARS ! 'Tirpitz' the pig after being captured and adopted by the British. The pig started service life on board the German light cruiser DRESDEN which was sunk by the Royal Navy on 14 May 1915. A sailor from HMS GLASGOW noticed 'Tirpitz' swimming in the water and after nearly being drowned by the frightened pig , succeeded in rescuing... him. They named the giant pig after German admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, and awarded him the Iron Cross for his bravery in seeing sense and changing his allegiance to the British cause. 'Tirpitz' served as the mascot of HMS GLASGOW for a year and was then transferred to Whale Island Gunnery School, Portsmouth for the rest of his career. After many years Tirpitz was auctioned off as pork - raising 1,785 for the British Red Cross in his final mission. Tirpitz's head was mounted and can now be seen at the Imperial War Museum in London, and his trotters were turned into handles for a carving set. The set was used aboard the Glasgow in World War II, thus making Tirpitz the only pig to have served aboard a warship during two conflicts. "that will do pig, that will do" photo: agephotostock
