We love the lunge at Pilates4physio for many types of hip and knee conditions. Once pain has settled down, it’s a great exercise and can be progressed from body weight to adding weights. A recent review of studies on Plantar Fasciitis: Custom orthotics: studies showed no benefit compared to over counter orthotics. You just need to off load the fascia until it heals. Heel cups and taping are also good short term options. Strengthening is just as important than stretching the foot. The facia needs to be re-loaded with resistance, as pain allows. Only stretching it, or foot rolling, risks irritating it. The calf muscles might need stretching, but not necessarily the arch. Each person responds differently. Combined approach of the above is the most effective. Hiking around Brickworks. Up and down hills, sliding around a tad. Made the glutes and quads work with some balancing on the slippery trails. Pilates and Yoga are perfect complementary exercise forms. We can see the origins of yoga in many Pilates exercises. However each has its own distinct benefits too. Even though I am in the medical model, I believe in the merits of coming home to the classical in both. What was the essence of each form? It doesnt have to be out of reach to stay true to the essence. Most of the current research for muscle and joint injuries supports exercise and gradual strengthening, not injections, laser, shockwave or steroids. We are waiting for the time when we can open for in-person appointments. When we do, there will be a thorough infection control procedure in place to protect patients. Only one patients at a time and lots of time to avoid over-laps. We have already purchased disinfectant, masks and gloves and there will be phone screening prior to appointments. I know, it does not sound fun, but better safer than sorry! We want patients to come and not feel fear about attending the clinic. Safety, transparency and attention to detail will be our cornerstone.

WHICH EXERCISES ARE THE BEST FOR GLUTES? We get this question all the time. A 2020 systematic review analyzed 16 studies that measured the activation of gluteal maximus (GMAX) in specific exercises. This is the bigger gluteal muscle at the back of the hip and is important for so many functional tasks as well as looking good! The exercises classified as VERY HIGH LEVEL OF GLUT MAX ACTIVATION were STEP-UP, hex bar DEADLIFT, rotational barbell HIP THRUST, traditional barbell ...hip thrust, BELT SQUAT, SPLIT SQUAT, in-line LUNGE, traditional lunge, pull barbell hip thrust, modified SINGLE LEG SQUAT, conventional DEADLIFT, and band hip thrust. The step-up exercise and its variations present the highest levels of GMAX activation followed by several loaded exercises and its variations, such as deadlifts, hip thrusts, lunges, and squats. Many of the Pilates exercises on the equipment can be modified to provide the same levels of activation.
