The second series we'd like to introduce is our #TourismTuesday series. Due to Pinawa's natural beauty, waterfront location on the Winnipeg River, and its close proximity to Manitoba's largest city, tourism is an important part of Pinawa's local economy. For this reason we at PCDC will be using this 10-week series to talk about the value of tourism for communities like Pinawa, to highlight some local tourism based entrepreneurs, as well as to touch on some annual (Covid-permi...tting) events and attractions. This series begins by exploring Tourism from the Provincial lens with a recent video from Travel Manitoba. The tourism industry is important for Manitoba and it's many communities, because according to Travel Manitoba's (2017) document titled The Value of Tourism, tourism accounts for 20,618 jobs and 3% of GDP in Manitoba. PCDC strives to be an advocate for tourism based entrepreneurs, visitors to our community, as well as for our Pinawa residents, to ensure that tourism in Pinawa benefits everyone involved and is carried out sustainably. To support this work, we are currently planning a Pinawa #tourismstrategy, that we will start working on Spring 2021, so stay tuned for how you may be able to get involved! At Pinawa Community Development Corporation (PCDC), we are launching into a new 3 month social media schedule. The first series we'd like to introduce, is our #FreeMoneyMonday series that will be featured here on Facebook as well as on our LinkedIn (Pinawa Economic Development Office), and our Twitter (@PinawaCDC). This series will focus on highlighting financial supports that may benefit Pinawa based businesses, organizations, and/or households. The first program we'd like t...o highlight in this series is Community Futures Winnipeg River's Online Presence Booster Program. This program offers $750 in non-repayable funding to for-profit businesses, to help them hire a service provider/contractor for the purposes of helping to move business online, or to provide marketing assistance or one to one training to promote the business. This program is very easy to apply for and all for-profit businesses in Pinawa are eligible! Canada-China Celebration: Pinawa on the International Stage What an honour it was for Pinawa to be featured on the global stage, with Mayor Blair Skinner speaking on December 18th at this monumental event. The event was held virtually and marked Manitoba's Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Canada China Diplomatic Relationship, and Manitoba's 150th Birthday. Pinawa and Town of Churchill were the only communities with Mayors to be featured on the speaking panel. Mayor... Skinner communicated the gravity of participating in such a high-profile event, stating It is a privilege to share the virtual stage with so many distinguished speakers. It is particularly humbling to share this experience with His Excellency Mr. Cong Peiwu (Chinese Ambassador to Canada), The Honourable Mary Ng (Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Minister for Small Business and Export Promotion), and The Right Honourable Edward Schreyer (Former Governor General of Canada). Among other things, Mayor Skinner spoke about how Pinawa's strong relationship with China began in 2017 when himself, PCDCs Senior Economic Development Officer Shane Li, School District of Whiteshell superintendent Tim Stefanishyn and others embarked on a 13 day trip to China, visiting the cities of Heze, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. During his remarks, Mayor Skinner said of the trip, the "experience led to the formation of many strong friendships and a commitment by all parties to develop an economic development cooperation between cities and organizations in China, with Pinawa, Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba". Mayor Skinner also highlighted that since this trip, PCDC Senior Economic Development Officer Shane Li has developed strong economic infrastructure for Pinawa by creating pathways for immigration to the community "through the Province's Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program" and by supporting Pinawa to become "a designated entity with the Government of Canada's Start Up Visa Program." Mayor Skinner highlighted that these accomplishments have created "both a Provincial and Federal mechanism for entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to come to Pinawa".
