This right here. I’m trying so hard to keep it together. To stay positive because being positive and motivating others and being the pep-talker...that’s my norm and in my nature. But I’m struggling right now. Like so many of you out there. Tough to admit, but here I am. So rather than fake it, I’m keeping it real! Shit sucks right now. In lots of different ways for everyone. And I’m telling myself, as you should too, that’s it ok to be in a shitty mood and to let the kids watch TV all day and to do whatever I need to do to cope. And to stay healthy so I can keep going to work at the hospital and keep others around me healthy. Let’s talk Omegas! Omega-3 fats are a type of extra-healthy fat found in some nuts and seeds and cold water fish, shellfish, and algae. Omega-3 fats do all kinds of awesome things for the body. For instance, they can:... * keep our hearts and brains healthy * lower inflammation * improve our cells' communication * keep joints mobile * help us stay lean * help build muscle . There is strong evidence that omega-3s can: * improve your blood lipids (like triglycerides and HDL-C) * help reduce some symptoms of depression and anxiety * help reduce some ADHD symptoms * help regulate our metabolism and blood sugar . And other evidence, though not as strong, for: * preventing cancer * preserving memory * eye health * decreasing liver fat They also make fat-based tissues, like our brains and the fatty sheath that insulates our spinal cord and nerves, make many hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen, and make the membranes for all our cells. The fat we consume literally becomes a part of every one of our cells! Should you supplement? It depends on your preference. You can start by adding more fatty fish and naturally occurring fats to your diet. Supplementation of certain micronutrients and even macronutrients can be crucial to optimizing your health. One great example of this is Vitamin D! Especially those of us living in northern climates. Our bodies produce vitamin D via sun exposure on our skin, and unfortunately the hours of sun we receive here is less than ideal. Also, sunscreen prevents exposure!... Food sources of vitamin D are minimal (fatty fish, beef liver, eggs) and you would have to eat these foods every day. Too little vitamin D can cause calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood to decrease, leading to calcium being pulled out of the bones to help maintain stable blood levels. So what does this vitamin do for us? Very important for bone health Strengthens our immune system and aids cell to cell communication POTENTIAL benefits (some research showing these benefits but not 100% proven): Improved strength and muscle efficiency Cancer prevention Depression management Respiratory system health Cardiovascular system health Brain development Even though it is fat-soluble (meaning we don't just "pee out" the unused vitamin like most, making it potentially easier to become toxic), it is very rare to overdose on vitamin D. The current recommendation by Health Canada is 600IU per day (ages 1-70) and 400IU for infants. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 4000IU as per Health Canada. I personally take more than that . Brad’s meal prep Sunday! Our preps look quite a bit different. Our goals right now are different, plus we are different gender, size, body types, and food tolerances. Where I am eating for fat loss, Brad is currently eating to bulk; he’s working very hard at the gym and eating tons of calories (3900cals per day) broken up into 7 meals. His macro split is 35-45-20 (carb protein fat). Not everything is pictured here, but you can see he preps every single meal so he knows exactl...y what he needs throughout the day. Meal prep Sunday! This is the extent of my meal prep today. I had a couple meals in the freezer from last week so all I needed to cook was 5 meals (5 chicken breasts). I forgot to buy more eggs, but that’s an easy thing to do mid-week. Boiling eggs for the week ahead makes for quick easy snacks and meal-additions! I short-cutted my peanut chicken idea and used pre-made peanut sauce. This is more sugar and additives than is ideal, but that’s what was in my fridge and what ...I felt like making! Sautéed veggies with pepper, and easy brown rice. Put some nuts in ziplocks, cucumbers and berries ready to eat (just need a quick wash), cheese ready to go, and two protein shakes a day. Supplements not pictured. This makes up my 5 meals a day, 40-30-30 macro split. Easy peasy, and I’m on track for the week . Nutrition Matters! The important of Energy Balance. If energy (calories) IN is greater than energy OUT (heat, movement, other metabolic activity), we will package and store fat. It can be a pretty simple concept, but every body is different and finding the correct balance can be tricky. We all know the dreaded calorie count. But the truth is, we can never really accurately know exactly how many calories we are eating or expending. We may be able to somewhat count calories con...sumed, but what our bodies do with those nutrients varies. Factors such as exercise, daily movements, body composition, hormones, genetics, age, GI microbiome, and the type of food all contribute to how we metabolize nutrients. Long story short, the only way to truly determine what amount and type of food is right for a person is to track intake, output, and long term results closely. We’re Launching!! And we can’t wait to work with you! I am a Certified Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach and a Registered Nurse. I’m thrilled and privileged to hopefully be working with many of YOU in the near future!
