This week marks S. D. (Jim) Edgar Celebrating 70 Years At Pioneer Press Ltd. Jim started in the printing trade in 1949 at Sun Publishing. He was hired at Pioneer Press Ltd. by Cody McDonald on December 12, 1950. It was on a temporary basis as a pressman to make some money to buy his Mum a Christmas present. Jim and friend George McEwen purchased the company from Cody in 1963 and their friendship and partnership continued until George’s passing in July 2001. Today, at 86 ye...ars of age, Jim still comes in every day and is very active in the business. On a more personal note, 15 year old Jim (or Samuel as he was known then) emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in August 1949, with his father, John, aboard The RMS Aquitania. Although Jim was not excited to leave his friends and the rest of his family, they came to Canada for opportunity. His recollection of the trip include being violently seasick crossing the Atlantic and arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax. His Mum, brother, two sisters and their beloved dog Spot followed in the May of 1950. Jim married Jessie Cox in May 1957 and they had three daughters, Patricia (Allan), Christine (Michael), Jennifer (Glenn) and six grandchildren; Dylan, Lauren, Kyra, Ian, Jared and Nicholas. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in May 2007. Jessie passed away in April, 2012 after a lengthy illness. Besides running Pioneer Press Ltd., Jim is an avid Mason and Shriner who devotes his free time to both organizations. He has also been travelling (pre Covid) and enjoying life with his partner Lois. Since we cannot celebrate together, we invite you to join with us in acknowledging this amazing milestone by calling Jim at 780-436-6015 or emailing him at [email protected]. He is in the office 11:00 am to 2:30 pm and he would love to hear from you!

With so many local businesses experiencing hardships due to Covid - Please remember to support local. Support the businesses that are employing our family and friends, support the businesses that are actually contributing to our local economy and support the businesses that are giving back to our community. Please think twice before you purhase that something on-line that doesn’t do these things just to save yourselves a buck or two.
