#Repost @qualatex with @make_repost Introducing our new weekly series, The Q Crew," where you will meet the people behind the scenes who make Pioneer Balloon Company (manufacturer of Qualatex balloons) what it is. No better place to start but with our fearless leaders! ... Ted A. and Betty Vlamis are the President and Executive Vice President of Pioneer as well as husband and wife. They worked for General Mills for 14 years before moving to Wichita, KS, to work for a small food company. After a larger corporation acquired that company, they came across an opportunity to get into balloon manufacturing through a business school contact. With no knowledge of balloons, they visited a manufacturing facility in Ohio, where they found some very dedicated people and a lot of growth opportunities. They eventually acquired the latex manufacturing plant and a customer list. Pioneer began with four employees in Wichita, KS, and 85 employees at the plant in Willard, OH. Ted and Betty had fresh ideas and were ready to look at things differently. At that time, the industry consisted primarily of very simple custom printed balloons for carnivalsnothing like the massive balloon industry we know today! Balloons were seen as toys for kids, and Ted and Betty didn't think that adequately reflected the allure of balloons. Instead, they viewed balloons as being for the kid inside each of us. Another key philosophy they implemented was the idea that providing balloon education would give professionals more tools to be more successful, which is why quality education is a cornerstone of the Qualatex brand. Ted and Betty make a pretty good team after working together for 48 years. They have grown Pioneer from 89 employees in two locations to nine locations worldwide and several hundred employees. Learn more about our leaders in the series "Tuesday Talks with Ted & Betty" on the Pioneer Worldwide YouTube channel. See more
