PRO TIP OF THE DAY: HUMIDITY CONTROL Humidity control and insulation go hand in hand. By improving the humidity levels in your home, you can help to improve the effectiveness of your insulation. The amount of moisture in the air affects the humidity in your environment. Here are 10 handy tips to REDUCE the amount of humidity and moisture in your home:... 1. Use your Air Conditioner; 2. Actively use your Exhaust/Ventilation Fans during cooking or showering; 3. Take cooler showers! Hot showers = humid air; 4. Fix any leaking pipes and faucets; 5. Keep your gutters clean; 6. Dry your laundry outside; 7. Get a dehumidifier; 8. Move your house plants. Plants release their fair share of moisture. If your home has a lot of indoor plants, this could be causing your humidity level to increase; 9. Use charcoal briquettes. Charcoal briquettes arent just for barbecuing anymore! They actually make a pretty good dehumidification tool. Take a few briquettes and place them in a can. Charcoal is very absorbent, and will suck moisture out of your air. Replace them every 2-3 months; 10. Open a window. Lastly, to get a precise humidity reading in your home, you could purchase a HYGROMETER. A hygrometer measures moisture levels in the air. Theyre not expensive and you can find them at your local hardware store. Once you have your hygrometer, measure the air in your home. If it is higher than 45-50% you need to reduce your humidity levels. Stay cool everyone! Your Pirie Insulation Team, Ryan: 613-570-8965 Doug: 613-281-5985

PRO TIP OF THE DAY If the fiberglass within your wall cavity or in your attic becomes wet from a leaky roof or burst pipe, it will lose insulating effectiveness until the material dries out over time. However, if the fiberglass batts or loose-fill insulation becomes inundated with dirty flood water and becomes soaked throughout, the fibers may become cemented together with dirt and form clumps. Compressed or contaminated fiberglass will no longer be very effective as insulati...on and it should be replaced. So, while we all love a good spring melt, keep in mind that ANY leaks in either your roof or siding can and will compromise your insulation. If you have any concerns about your insulations effectiveness, give us a call for a FREE Insulation Evaluation! Your Pirie Insulation Team, Ryan: 613-570-8965 Doug: 613-281-5985

PRO TIP OF THE DAY Are you thinking about DIY-ing your own insulation installation? Think again! Fiberglass insulation is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny glass particles that when not handled or installed properly, can cause serious skin irritations, allergies, respiratory issues and household damage. In extreme DIY cases, living room furniture not properly covered during installation was found to be causing terrible skin rashes and constant prickling.... Insulation professionals are not only trained to properly install insulation to avoid these dangers and irritations, but are also protected from head-to-toe to make sure that they remain safe themselves. At Pirie Insulation, we have over 35 years of experience professionally advising and installing fiberglass insulation for our customers. Our team is trained to keep not only your home safe...but also to ensure that the health and welfare of YOUR FAMILY comes first. Your Pirie Insulation Team, Ryan: 613-570-8965 Doug: 613-281-5985

FUN FACT! Ever wonder how pink insulation was invented? A new type of fiber insulation appeared in the 1930s. At Corning Glass in 1932, researcher Dale Kleist was trying to join glass blocks together to create transparent, weatherproof walls. During an unsuccessful attempt to use glass as a sealant, a stream of compressed air hit the flow of molten glass, forming a spray of tiny fibers. This fortunate accident led to a 1936 patent for Fiberglas. ... Fiberglas was economical and easy to produce in large quantities. A magazine article from 1938 proclaimed it a new marvel of science and explained that a single marble, weighing only -ounce, produces the incredible amount of 90 MILES of glass fiber, so finely are the threads drawn. Owens Corning used the versatile material to reinforce plastic. The company also spun Fiberglas into thread, wove it to make cloth, and blew it into light, puffy insulation. This wonderful type of insulation is still pink...and still keeping homes warm and safe after over 70 years!

PRO TIP OF THE DAY Spring is that time of year when its too early to turn on the air conditioning but too warm to keep the heat on. Pirie Insulation recommends that this is the ideal time to start your home insulation installations. Properly installed insulation will address everything from seasonal temperature changes that affect constantly turning the air conditioner up and down to any possibly leaks brought on by dreaded spring showers. With high air-conditioning bills ar...ound the corner, upgrading insulation during spring could save on electricity. Poorly insulated attics and basements contribute to significant heat/cool loss, and energy waste. Upgrading your attic, crawlspace and/or unfinished basement with insulation can result in almost immediate savings. Give us a call for your free INSULATION EVALUATION and step into spring with the confidence of a well-insulated home! Your Pirie Insulation Team, Ryan: 613-570-8965 Doug: 613-281-5985

PRO TIP OF THE DAY: Any time you see icicles dangling from gutters, it is a sign of a potentially costly problem in a home. If you live in an area that experiences significant snowfall and consistently cold temperatures, your home is a candidate for forming ice dams. Spending the time and money to prevent ice dams is much easierand more economicalthan trying fix them once they form. Calling a roofing crew to remove ice and snow is costly and MORE expensive than having an in...sulation professional seal and insulate for you. Ice removal wont stop ice dams from forming again. If you believe your home is a candidate for ice dams or youve had them before, give us a call for your FREE Insulation Evaluation. We proudly serve the entire Ottawa Valley!
