Join our staff members, teacher Caryn Rubio and Natashia Allakariallak, to talk about supporting learners. They talk about understanding behaviour through a lens of self regulation. "As parents and educators it’s really important for all of us to get the education that we need, whether it’s reading a few articles or watching something on Youtube, or taking a little webinar, to really start to train ourselves about children and their needs, and why are they acting this way, w...hat is setting them off. And as adults we can be reflective, and we can go back and we can say 'oh, this is what is triggering this child.' Is it - did they need a movement break, did they have breakfast, are they just having a hard time expressing themselves? There can just be so many things that can be hard in a day for our kids with FASD, or any kid at all." [Video and transcript available on our website. https://youtu.be/ibAlt8xH5jk]

People with FASD have a right to fully participate in their communities, places of work and schools. We can honour peoples rights by ensuring policies and approaches are FASD-informed, including offering accommodations, assistive devices, and other supports. Sometimes, people need different tools to help create equality. Equity makes equality possible. #FASD #FASDmonth #endstigma #tamatta #allofustogether #letstalkaboutFASD #equity

FASD is mostly an "invisible disability". In the past, we used to look for facial features to identify FASD (called "sentinel facial features"). Now, we know there are multiple factors that can impact the development of facial features. Facial features are grown in a narrow window of a baby's development. Most people with FASD will not have sentinel facial features. The presence or lack of sentinel facial features does not indicate a person's level of need for support. ... #FASD #FASDmonth #endstigma #tamatta #allofustogether #letstalkaboutFASD [Illustrator: Charlotte Karetak]
