2020 has been a revelatory year, and many Canadians are starting to examine the discrimination and inequality inherent in our public systems. How do we keep pushing for change once we finally see the problem? This is the last of the Did You Wonder series, and we hope you found it thought-provoking. Conversations about challenging topics are part of how we move forward to create a society where everyone is valued and included. The conversation doesn't end with us! If voting rights aren't extended to everyone, can democratic governments really claim to represent the people? This is the last Canadian History of Transformations in this series. We hope you found it informative to learn about moments from the past, as we consider what kinds of moments we will create in the future. Giving Tuesday is the 1st of December! We'll be sharing some posts about the programming you support when you give to Pi. We loved working with Melissa Oei and Robert Garry Haacke in our 19-20 season before Lampedusa had to be postponed. We're looking forward to trying again this season, with Performance Works in April / May. Lampedusa examines the migrant/refugee crisis. Our Cornerstone Productions are the anchor for our season, setting the major themes that are re...flected in our other programming: Pi Provocateurs, Close Encounters, and work done through Prime Placements. We'll have more on our other programming in upcoming posts. Our Cornerstone Production is often a Canadian premiere, which brings in new perspectives and ideas. Visit the link: https://pitheatre.com/support/donate Donate $10 or more and become a member. You'll get exclusive show experiences, as well as other perks throughout the season. #GivingTuesday #GivingTuesdayCA #VanGives #theatre #canadiantheatre #vancouver #community See more

Institutions with significant power are usually designed to keep power concentrated among the absurdly wealthy, rather than truly sharing power and creating equity. CBC Writers and Company host, Eleanor Wachtel, speaks to Ayad Akhtar about the unflinching honesty in this partly autobiographical work; the casino that is American life; and the consequences of everyone becoming a storyteller in the era of social media. Akhtar is a Pulitzer Prize-winning, Pakistani American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, and he discusses his latest work, Homeland Elegies. Congratulations Taylor Mac! The Norwegian Ministry of Culture has named Taylor Mac (judy) the recipient of the International Ibsen Award. Taylor Mac asks fundamental questions about what theatre should be and why it matters in in the 21st century, the International Ibsen Award committee released in a statement. In a world of increased polarization and divisions, Mac crafts work that shows theatre’s potential to bind and unite audiences, to think about how we relate to cu...lture in its various forms, and what it means to engage with other human beings imaginatively, ethically, and politically, through the act of performance. We had a blast producing the Canadian premiere of Taylor Mac's HIR for our 2018-19 season! #theatre #awards #judy #taylormac #moreglitterlesshate #fearlessTheatre

If you’re an actor or comedian with an idea for a solo show but you’re struggling with blank-page paralyses, overwhelm, or self-doubt, AND you’re craving camaraderie, inspiration, and guidance to get your idea out of your head and into the world, this Lab is for you. Led by internationally-acclaimed solo artist, Haley McGee (Ex-Boyfriend Yard Sale), this practical 6-week course gives performers a blueprint for solo show creation. Gain the skills, deadlines, and confidence to ...create the solo you’ve been dreaming of in a dynamic and supportive environment, so you can create opportunities for yourself and take control of your career. Using video lessons jam-packed with exercises and weekly live Q&A sessions, each week focuses on a different step of development: generating material, defining your central theme, structure, editing and workshopping, incorporating design, approaching venues, and applying for funding. "Hugely inspiring and encouraging space to develop work. Gave me faith in my material and myself. So much fun, supportive, enjoyable. Made the (scary for me) practical administrative, networking, and producing aspects seem doable and achievable." - Zola Curtis, past participant Dates: W/C 7th of Sep 12th of Oct (6 weeks) Fee: $335 CAD (payment plans available) Learn more and enrol: http://www.haleymcgee.ca/online-solo-show-creation-lab
We here at Pi are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Jayson McLean. Jayson worked on at least 21 Pi shows over the years. Big shows. Often with a lot of technical challenges. None were ever too large for his enthusiasm or his imagination. Jayson was a great collaborator with a big heart. He was good in so many ways. Cheers to you Jayson for your love of life and the life you gave to the theatre. You’ll be deeply missed.
