For us, coffee and culture are deeply connected Years ago, we started to think about how we could sustain support for language programming and the idea for a social enterprise was born. Our Executive Director, Pamela Hakongak Gross, was recently interviewed for CBC's Unreserved about how we're promoting and learning Inuinnaqtun through our coffee company Kaapittiaq. Listen to the whole episode, or find us at the 39:10 mark.

We are collaborating on a green building project in Cambridge Bay this summer, testing green technologies and energy efficient materials while integrating local knowledge and traditional architecture. On Tuesday May 18, from 1-5pm, we will be hosting a community event at the May Hakongak Community Library & Cultural Centre. You can virtually meet with our partnering team of researchers from the Green Building Technology Lab at the Southern Alberta Institute for Technology, ...discuss our ideas for green energy design, and provide feedback on what design features you would like to see brought to our community. There will be design activities for participants to share their thoughts. If you have built or retrofitted your house to consume less diesel and electricity, installed solar and wind energy systems on your cabin, or worked through your home challenges (such as ice build-up , mold, or high humidity levels), we would love to hear your thoughts and the solutions you designed! How do you keep your home and building comfortable while consuming less energy? We will also have virtual tours of our researcher’s lab in Calgary, and one-on-one sessions with their engineers to learn about their projects (and propose new ones too!). There will be 2 virtual tours of 30 min each, to be hosted at 1pm and 3pm. Please wear masks when attending the workshop, and avoid coming if you are feeling unwell. We will provide sanitizer, handwashing facilities, and masks for added safety. Attendance will be limited to 20 people at a time.

Through the Mentor-Apprentice approach, mentors pass on language and transmit cultural knowledge to the next generation of competent speakers, who will in turn ...become mentors and language teachers to the following generation, creating a ripple effect across our communities. Apprentices will learn Inuinnaqtun through conversation and activity-based learning that includes traditional and cultural activities, integrating language into daily life. The PI/KHS has been developing an online course to support participants in their introduction to Mentor-Apprentice Programming, protocols, and approaches. This course will have regular live sessions, but will also be recorded and available to download. The project will help support Mentor-Apprentice teams across Inuinnait communities or wherever they live. This summer, our partners spent a week filming segments of the online course. The concept was teaching the main principles of Mentor-Apprentice through a traditional Nuu-chah-nulth story. In the first photo, we’re behind the scenes as the story of the Son of Raven unfolds and in the second photo we see a workshop session in Cambridge Bay with a couple of our MAP teams. Today our Elders-in-Residence and Staff received the COVID-19 vaccine! When COVID-19 first hit Canada, we were deeply concerned as it was a short time ago that colonization, disease and epidemics ravaged our communities, and their effects continue to this day. Our Elders recall and lived through these hardships and we have sadly lost many loved ones to either the flu or tuberculosis (TB). During the 1950s, a massive outbreak saw one-third of Inuit infected with TB. Treatment...Continue reading
