Today, May 17th, is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia! For many of us today is a day to be loud and proud about our sexuality and gender. A celebration of our successes in pushing forward toward equity for our community. Today is also for coming together to recognize that our rights are not equal especially across the world, across races, and across classes. We need to remember that we cannot stop fighting until we are all safe, and we all have equitable access freedoms and rights. Together: resisting, supporting, healing. We are all in different places in our journeys but when we come together we can help each other along.

Like so many in our community, we are overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with grief, with anger, with disbelief. We know that you are hurting. We know that this month, th...is week, this day, has highlighted once again that so many people who experience sexual violence do not have access to justice. Without change, our systems will continue to retraumatize survivors Survivors who have been denied justice by a perpetrator, by a community, by law makers, by leaders, and by the courts. To survivors all survivors know that you are not alone. We believe you. We see you. We’re with you. And know that, no matter what someone might have told you, no matter how the legal system has failed you, no matter where you were or what you did what happened to you was not your fault. You are not to blame. You did not deserve it. You were not asking for it. You deserve better. You are strong. You are resilient. You are more than your trauma. You are not invisible. You are not defined by a label or by a system that has shut you down and shut you out. You deserve safety. You deserve respect. Trauma has ripple effects - for individuals and for communities. Our community will continue to feel the impacts of these traumas for a long time. Our confidential Support Line continues to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-726-2743. Passing this on. I am a Family Doctor and I want to keep a promise made to a patient. Julie was a healthy, post-menopausal woman in my care who came in for a p...eriodic health examination. One of my routine questions, in what is called the Review of Systems, was to ask if she had experienced any vaginal bleeding. She said No but then laughed and added, Other than when my period came back for a few months last year. All health care professionals are taught early on that ‘vaginal bleeding in a post-menopausal woman is Cancer of the Uterus until proven otherwise’. This comment by Julie was, therefore, a red flag (no pun intended) prompting further questions, an examination and an ultrasound of her pelvis. Julie was surprised to see me so concerned, especially since the symptoms had not recurred over many months. Sure enough, a pelvic ultrasound and tissue sampling confirmed Cancer of the Uterus. Julie underwent a hysterectomy and radiation therapy. She is now healthy, cancer-free and is expected to stay that way. After all this was done, Julie sat ME down for a talk. She told me she’d had no idea a ‘short return’ of her period after menopause was a danger signal. Furthermore, she addressed the topic with friends over coffee and discovered that, out of 20 women, NONE of them knew this symptom was abnormal! She admonished me to Tell women this! Don’t assume we know it! From that day on, I have kept Julie’s advice in mind when talking with post-menopausal patients. But recently my wife suggested that I should take this to a wider audience. So, Julie, this is for you: If you are a post-menopausal woman and your period ‘comes back’ or you have even one episode of vaginal bleeding, TELL A HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL and insist on having it investigated! Wishing you all good health and long lives.

It can be very difficult, intimidating, and even dangerous for youth who are members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to speak about their perspectives. This is why the Office of Child and Yourh Advocate is launching the 30 for 30 Campaign. They are inviting young people who identify as members of this community to send them their messages that will help build awareness and understanding of their insights, experiences, and perspectives. They will post one of their messages every day for the month of November on the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate’s website and twitter feed. This will amplify these important voices in a safe way. No names , home communities, or other identifying information will be posted. Email [email protected]

A pap is simple and should be painless. From Community-Based Research Centre: "While COVID-19 continues to impact the lives of everyone in Canada and around the world, we know that the pandemic has created unique pressures on the health and well-being of gay, bi, queer and trans men, and Two-Spirit and non-binary people (GBT2Q). Even before COVID-19, our communities have been facing significant mental, social, and sexual health challenges, which have been negatively impacted by physical distancing and the pandemic’...s disruption to health services that we rely on, such as testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. In order to better understand how the pandemic has affected GBT2Q people across Canada, Community-Based Research Centre in partnership with the Ontario HIV Treatment Network is launching a national special COVID-19 edition of our Sex Now survey! However, to address these issues, we need your help: can you spare some time to fill out the survey and share your thoughts?" https://www.cbrc.net/covid19_survey

"On Labor Day, I call loudly for sex work to be decriminalized worldwide, because I know that workers ourselves know best how to stamp out coercion and exploita...tion in our industry. Society would draw lines between us, dividing those of us who love our work from those of us who hate it, distinguishing those of us with managers from those of us who work independently, splitting us by race or gender or nationality or type of work. But sex workers reject all of those divisions, and stand united across our differences in our call for decriminalization." See more
