Fishing with Peter - A new boat, a new fishing season and time to enjoy them both. The pristine new boat, a top-of-the-line, clear plastic model from BACKWATER Boats, in Langley B.C. came as a complete surprise and one that will be put to good use in the months ahead. When you are well into your eighties and live on British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, the fishing opportunities are pretty well without limit. Trout, both rainbow and cutthroat, in lakes large and small, coho sa...lmon off our ocean beaches along with bass in some trout lakes, including a number within easy reach of hometown Nanaimo, offer variety in plenty. BACKWATER Boats have asked me to give their Evolution clear version a thorough testing and it definitely will be well used in the months ahead. They also offer three other models from the same mould, in Enforcer black, Classic white and Sportsman green, each weighing 59 lbs. At 7’ 6 and a solid but not too heavy 65 lbs (29.5kg) the slightly heavier, see-through version is a perfect size for the single-handed fly fisherman and robust enough to stand up to hard use, to being launched and landed from and on stony fresh and saltwater beaches. It’s sure to have its share of scrapes and scratches by the time the year is out but then that’s to be expected. Boats can be used and admired at the same time and this one has already earned some favorable comments on one of our local lakes. As it happens I am well used to fishing from a small boat with almost two decades spent casting flies from a 7’ fibreglass dinghy, one that now is heading into well-earned and well-used retirement and, hopefully, welcoming new ownership. It’s generally referred to as the Little White Boat or LWB and, after some discussion with close fishing friends, it’s been agreed that the newcomer should be known as the LCB or Little Clear Boat. I had originally thought of CTHRU as a possible name but it was felt that was just too clever and so it was discarded. Peter McMullan is an active Vancouver Island fly fisherman and author of two fishing books and numerous magazine articles. From now on he will be keeping BACKWATER Boats up-to-date with his experiences fishing from the clear Boat.
