The mutations are certainly concerning that the virus has been able to, in some ways, adapt to humans. But at the end of the day, this is not a variant that can now permeate walls and go through glass and suddenly make it through masks and all those things. So we have to be cognizant of that.

While Dempsey acknowledged those case numbers have dwindled, he said the upcoming loosening of public-health restrictions and the arrival of much more virulent variants of the virus that are increasing in number in the province will likely mean a jump in infections at long-term care homes. ‘Alberta Health needs to get involved right now to mitigate this situation,’ he said.

We rely on coffee to get through the day sometimes, but this Saskatoon man is taking it a step further by importing two varieties that are rarely consumed in Canada. One type, the racemosa coffee, sells for $60 for 32 grams. He compares it to buying a bottle of champagne also five servings at around the same cost. If you can’t commit to a bag, he hopes that soon, you’ll find a cup in one of SK’s coffee shops.

We are excited for our second staff spotlight: Roger Klassen, Calgary’s Operations Manager! After having dedicated the majority of his career working in the oilfields of Alberta, Roger was looking for a change of pace and not ready to slow down. While he was new to funeral service, he carried a certificate of operations management and a strong interest in learning more about the industry of death care. He saw a way he could contribute to something profound and essential for h...is community. After meeting with Sheri, it became clear he would be a good fit. Roger is dedicated to providing a standard of care that is unmatched by other companies, and his motto is It isn’t about doing something well enough; it’s about doing it right. He has become a crucial part of Platinum, not only with training staff and maintaining quality of equipment, but as a roadmap for how other teams should operate. Sheri felt comfortable leaving things in Roger's hands in Alberta while she expanded in Saskatchewan and spent substantial time there. It isn’t just about Roger’s steadfast work ethics, but what he brings to the table as a person. He is a dedicated husband and father, with a family of five who often worry about the projects he takes on, but love seeing the result. He loves working on home renovations, motorcycles, and cars, and there isn’t much he can’t do because he’s always willing to face a challenge and learn something new. He’s an avid outdoorsman, and before Covid, spent many evenings a week in the curling rink. Colleagues like Steve call Roger an optimist, others miss our fun training sessions with his staircase, and Lee fondly recalls many conversations during long dispatches together that helped form trust. Many families have often remarked on his compassion and integrity, and it’s no wonder. We personally love having him and know that our company is forever changed because of his role within it.

A poem we found very fitting and touching for the isolation we all feel; a ray of hope about making it through this time together, and the sweetness of simple acts of community. - The Miracle of Morning... I thought I’d awaken to a world in mourning. Heavy clouds crowding, a society storming. But there’s something different on this golden morning. Something magical in the sunlight, wide and warming. I see a dad with a stroller taking a jog. Across the street, a bright-eyed girl chases her dog. A grandma on a porch fingers her rosaries. She grins as her young neighbor brings her groceries. While we might feel small, separate, and all alone, Our people have never been more closely tethered. The question isn’t if we will weather this unknown, But how we will weather this unknown together. So on this meaningful morn, we mourn and we mend. Like light, we can’t be broken, even when we bend. As one, we will defeat both despair and disease. We stand with healthcare heroes and all employees; With families, libraries, schools, waiters, artists; Businesses, restaurants, and hospitals hit hardest. We ignite not in the light, but in lack thereof, For it is in loss that we truly learn to love. In this chaos, we will discover clarity. In suffering, we must find solidarity. For it’s our grief that gives us our gratitude, Shows us how to find hope, if we ever lose it. So ensure that this ache wasn’t endured in vain: Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it. Read children’s books, dance alone to DJ music. Know that this distance will make our hearts grow fonder. From a wave of woes our world will emerge stronger. We’ll observe how the burdens braved by humankind Are also the moments that make us humans kind; Let every dawn find us courageous, brought closer; Heeding the light before the fight is over. When this ends, we’ll smile sweetly, finally seeing In testing times, we became the best of beings. - By Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman - Image photographed by Kelia Anne

‘I want people to know this is not a doom and gloom place,’ Boechler said. ‘This is where people come in and they’re living. And yes they will die but right now they’re still living, and we will do everything to make that life as meaningful as possible.’
