Hi everyone, Happy Barbershop Quartet Day (and happy Easter)! We hope this note finds you safe and well, and weathering all of the current challenges that face us. We were planning to send out this note several weeks ago, but given everything that’s going on it didn’t really seem important. However, with today’s ‘celebration’ of the barbershop quartet, it seems like as good a time as any to tell you about some changes to ours. ... After a year with Playback, and shortly following our win in the 2018 Fall Contest, our tenor Mike told us that he was taking a step back from barbershop in order to spend more time with his family. As such, although we competed in Salt Lake City with our good friend Michael Black, the quartet wasn’t especially active throughout 2019 as we figured out our next steps. We take our responsibility as your 2018 Ontario District Champs very seriously, and despite our situation we really didn’t want to be a ‘one-and-done’ quartet; that’s really not who we are. With that in mind, we undertook a search for a replacement tenor to join us moving forward. We were fortunate to have a number of fantastic singers and people as candidates to try out with, and we had fun singing with each of them they made our decision difficult. When the dust had settled, we found a newish barbershopper with an already impressive resumé to join the quartet. We are thrilled to introduce our new tenor to you; please welcome Matt Dolgin! Matt joined TNL in 2016, and in 2019 competed for the first time in quartet at the Next Generation contest in Salt Lake City with The Last Drop, winning a 5th Place Bronze Medal. Matt is also an active musical theatre performer, and (prior to everything being suspended) was taking on the role of Prince Topher in the Alexander Showcase Theatre production of Cinderella. We’re incredibly grateful for all of the support you’ve given us to date, and we know you’ll all make Matt feel a great Ontario District welcome too. We’re really excited to take this next step in our journey! Even though we can't really quartet at the moment, we hope you had a happy barbershop quartet day, and again, have a happy Easter too! We had such a great time performing in the Tabernacle during the Barbershop Harmony Society Quartet Quarter Finals last week. Here are some great shots from the BHS. We had a great time at the Harmony Ranch open-house show this Saturday. It was fun to debut our new contest song, and to have our first performance with Michael Black prior to taking the big stage in SLC. Happy Easter, everyone!

Hi everyone! With the ONT Prelims now just a fond memory, Playback is honoured to have the opportunity to represent the Ontario District again at the Barbershop Harmony Society International in Salt Lake City this July. Shortly before the prelims, our tenor Mike decided that for family reasons, he wouldn’t be able to make the trip with us to Salt Lake. However, the quartet still very much wanted to attend the International Contest to put on the best performance we could. With... that in mind, we approached our very dear friend Michael Black of 'Shoptimus Prime Quartet fame (replacing Mike with a Michael makes rehearsals easier) before the prelims, who agreed to sing with us in Salt Lake if we were fortunate enough to qualify. Safe in the knowledge that we had an amazing tenor to fill in for Mike (not Michael) in Salt Lake, we were thrilled to place second this last weekend to the fabulous Yonge Guns Quartet, and for both quartets to also be joining with Supertonic and Toronto Northern Lights as your Ontario District - Barbershop Harmony Society Reps this summer. After such a wonderful weekend in Belleville, we’d love for you all to come along with us all for the trip! However, if you can’t make it we hope to see you at the Pep Rally, Harmony Ranch or somewhere else soon. Wherever we see you, we promise to work hard over the next few months to ensure that we represent Ontario to the best of our ability this summer. Thanks again for all of your ongoing support! Well, wasn't that a fun weekend! We're thrilled to be headed back to International again alongside our brothers in Toronto Northern Lights, Supertonic and Yonge Guns Quartet (and our heartiest congrats to both Supertonic and Yonge Guns too!). It truly is an honour to represent the Ontario District - Barbershop Harmony Society, and we'll all do our best in July to do you proud. Weekends like this couldn't happen without the support of our families. We spend lots of time away f...rom them each week, as well as the time away for conventions. We truly couldn't do this without all of the love, support and latitude you give to us. Of course all groups need fantastic external advice, and Playback Quartet is no exception. Our two coaches throughout this season were two that we've worked with from the beginning. Huge thanks to both Jeff Taylor and Vinnie Sestito for being great coaches and friends to us on our journey. We were also fortunate enough this weekend to get an extended coached evaluation session with Steve Scott which was super eye-opening, and we're looking forward to experimenting more with what you taught us over the coming months. Our extended 'family' in Toronto Northern Lights and the Ontario District are also hugely supportive. Your kind words, encouragement, not to mention your generous applause are most definitely appreciated. Last night we got to sing at two hospitality suites that were both great fun. Thanks to A Cappella Niagara and TNL for hosting both! Some further hearty congrats to East York Barbershoppers for winning the District Chorus Championship, Nostalgia Express for winning the seniors contest, Brass Monkey as the Novice Champs, Barbershop Therapy as the Youth Quartet Champs, and not forgetting the incredible Ripple Effect as the ONT MBHA Quartet Champs. Well done to all, as well as to everyone that crossed the stage this weekend. Well, the 2018 Ontario District Fall Convention has come to an end, and a fun convention it was. A quick warning - this is a pretty long post. :) We are thrilled to have become the 2018 Ontario District - Barbershop Harmony Society Quartet Champions. For our tenor Mike, becoming a District Champ was the fulfilment of a twenty-year dream. It was also his first District pin of any kind too. Congrats, mate - we're so excited for you.... As ever, we owe a big thankyou to our coaches, Jeff Taylor and Jordan Travis. Both are great friends and we're lucky to have such great coaches on our doorstep. A special shoutout to Jeff though, who continues to be our mentor on this journey. We missed you this weekend, buddy! Thanks again to everyone in the District for your ongoing and awesome support. We're truly blessed to belong to such a wonderful District. We were thrilled for our great friends in The Aristocrats Quartet who continued to entertain audiences with their wonderful brand of humour to earn a 4th consecutive silver medal. It was a little too close for comfort, boys! ;) Rounding out the medals were Nostalgia Express, who indeed took us on a trip down memory lane (especially Lee and Mike) with some classic tunes. Congrats to Double Double and Quiet, I'm Sleeping who became Seniors and Novice Champs respectively. Great job, guys! Our chorus, Toronto Northern Lights, won the International Preliminary contest to become Reps to the International in Salt Lake City next year. Only one of us (Kevin) was able to compete with our chorus this year, so it was a little strange and very cool for Lee, Jean and Mike to get to see the chorus perform. Our great friends in Harbourtown Sound came in 2nd, and the seniors chorus, Maple Leaf Chord Company -under the direction of new Hall of Famer Ray Danley) put 81 member on stage to take 3rd place. Well done, guys! After the contest we had a really great session with Mark Kettner - thanks for the help, Mark! We also had a lot of fun singing with him afterwards too. Now we're turning our thoughts to some upcoming events - Kitchener-Waterloo Dawg Haus night and the Durham Shores Chorus show, both in November. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, if you'd like to have us come sing for you, we're pretty sure we'd love to come and sing for you even more! We'll look forward to seeing you all soon.
