Christmas Survival Guide for your Teeth -Pt 4 Moderation Oh no, Moderation, the dreaded word of the silly season. We don’t want to join in the nagging crowd of health professionals, but alas, it is the sure fire way to keep those cavities at bay. Plus, it might help your waistline as well. Just say no to that extra sweet between meals. Have a glass of water instead of soft drink. A little piece here and there will help, and you’ll feel empowered by your ability to say no.... Teeth Aren’t Tools Don’t get silly with the silly season. Pulling out that party trick you saw one time when that one guy opened a beer with his teeth is only going to make you the clown. Using your teeth as a tool on the simplest of non-food objects is slowly although in some cases rapidly breaking down your teeth. Don’t open the cracker packet with your teeth. Use the scissors on the sticky tape. Make decisions that help your teeth. Nobody wants to leave a party with half-a-tooth less than when they arrived. Nevertheless, Perhaps a check up after Christmas or in the New year is best! Get in contact with us today to book your appointment!

Christmas Survival Guide for your Teeth -Pt 3 Chew Sugarless Gum Chewing gum stimulates saliva production. Saliva is your body’s version of mouth-wash which helps to wash away the sugars that build up around your teeth.... Note: chewing gum containing sugar is completely redundant! Chew Your Way to a Healthy Mouth Don’t forget about the foods that will give your dental hygiene a fighting chance. Quick Guide to Foods that Love You Back: Broccoli, tofu, almonds, fish, eggs, poultry, nuts, capsicums, oranges, kale, cucumbers, carrot and apple Remember though, that this guide is for fresh and or raw products consumed in their natural state. Smothering your carrot stick in French onion dip isn’t going to reap the benefits of raw carrot.

Good morning, please be careful out there as the weather is frightful. Not only do we care for your health, we want to you safe! Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, please remember those who sacrifice their lives for our freedom. Patriotism is not dying for one's country, it is living for one's country. And for humanity. Perhaps that is not as romantic, but it's better.

Christmas Survival Guide for your Teeth -Pt 2 I’m sure everyone know the most frequently asked question by your dentist every time you pay a visit.. ‘Are you flossing regularly?’ This seems to be the most forgotten or disregarded chore for most, yet it plays such an important role in dental health especially after those sugary meals. ( And yes! All those guilty pleasures over the festive season I’m talking about!) Floss is designed to get into the spaces your teeth!... Drink Plenty of Water Not only will keeping up your water intake keep you hydrated in the summer heat and stop you from becoming the clown who’s had one too many champagnes, water will help flush out the sugars and other nasties from what you have been eating and drinking.

Christmas Survival Guide for your Teeth -Pt 1 Timing is Key The biggest factor for the development of cavities is the length of time sugars are staying in your mouth. While you’re doing the rounds visiting family and friends in the lead up to Christmas and on the big day keep your toothbrush handy.... Try to squeeze in some cheeky brushes between meals, treats and drinks. This is the key to not letting those nasty sugars combine with the natural bacteria in your mouth and cause trouble. How Old is Your Brush? While everyone’s getting shiny new presents it is time to think about your teeth too. You should be replacing your brush every three to four months!

So check in for some simple and easy tips

5 Reasons to use Your Dental Insurance Before the End of the Year The fall has come and gone and our thoughts are turning to the cooler weather and holiday cheer that are on the horizon. But this is a time when you should also be thinking about your dental benefits too. Many dental plans run on a calendar year and you can save hundreds of dollars by using your benefits before the end of the year! Here are 5 reasons why making an appointment now can help you make the best of y...our dental plan: 1. Try to Use Your Yearly Maximum Benefit Most dental plans allow a yearly maximum benefit. This is often around $1,000 per insured person. If you haven’t used all of your benefits, it will not roll over to next year. So, if you need covered dental services and have unused benefits, you will want to use them up before the end of the year. 2. New Year = New Deductible If your dental plan has an annual deductible, you will have to pay it again next year. If you’ve already paid your deductible for this year, any additional dental work done before the end of the year won’t require a new deductible payment. 3. Take Care of Small Problems Before They Get Bigger Dental problems don’t go away. A small, easy-to-treat cavity today can become a painful toothache tomorrow. Use your dental benefits to stay ahead of dental problems and have a healthy and happy smile for the holidays! 4. Covered Services If you pay premiums for your dental insurance, you should be taking advantage of all covered services including screenings, x-rays, cleanings, etc. Not only will this help you maintain excellent dental health, but you will be getting the benefits you paid for too! 5. Make Your Appointment Sooner Rather than Later Waiting until the last minute could cost you money. As many patients rush to use up their benefits before the end of the year, appointment slots will fill up quickly. If you wait too long, you may not be able to get the appointment time you want.

Helpful Tips for Healthy Smiles at Halloween Halloween is just around the corner and we all know that for children, Halloween means candy and lots of it! However, when your child consumes sugary food or drinks, the bacteria (germs) in the dental plaque on the teeth mix with the sugars in the candy to make a mild acid. This acid attacks the hard outer layer of the tooth, called the enamel. If the dental plaque isn’t removed every day by brushing and flossing, over time, the en...Continue reading

How to Talk to Your Dentist About Your Fears You’ve finally done it. You made an appointment for the dentist for the time in years or the first time ever. Just because you’ve set the date doesn’t mean your fears about the dentist have magically gone away. They’re still there, eating away at you and keeping you up at night. The closer you get to the date of the appointment, the worse you feel. When it gets too bad, you cancel the appointment or just refuse to go. Don’t let thi...Continue reading

How Much Toothpaste Should You Use? Last week I was browsing on the internet and stumbled across this public health article. The aim was to educate parents about how much toothpaste is the right amount for young children. It got me thinking that if this is being addressed in large newspapers, then it might be a good idea to highlight it with the patients in my practice. Is there a right toothpaste?... Parents ask us questions about toothpaste from time to time, but usually, they are about what type of toothpaste we recommend. I don’t have a preference for brands, but we do have 2 recommendations: Use a toothpaste with fluoride in it, as recommended by the ADA, Choose the path of least resistance and use whatever brand/flavor your child likes the best. Don’t be shy to buy a few different types and have your child try them all to pick out their favorite, that’s what we did with our family. How much toothpaste should I use? One question that we don’t get asked very much is How much toothpaste should I use? We usually talk about this during the patient education part of our appointments, but it’s worth talking about it a little more in depth because there can be complications from using too much. So, what is the right amount? Well, it depends on the patient’s age. For kiddos less than 3 years old, use a smear of toothpaste that is roughly equivalent to a grain of rice. Why does it matter how much toothpaste you use? Kids have an immature swallow reflex, so they are likely swallowing whatever toothpaste you are using. If you’re applying the same amount of toothpaste that you are used to using, then your child is ingesting too much fluoride. Children who ingest too much fluoride at young ages while their permanent teeth are still developing under the gums are at risk of developing fluorosis. This condition causes white spots or stripes on permanent teeth. Keep this in mind if your child ingests a large amount of fluoridated toothpaste, he or she could experience signs of acute toxicity, or poisoning. Signs and symptoms include: Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Abdominal cramping Headache If your child is experiencing symptoms like this, call 911 and/or Poison Control. Brush safely & effectively In general, we want you to supervise your children to make sure that they aren’t using too much toothpaste, and also to make sure that they are brushing effectively. We're not aware of any official guidelines or recommendations, but most kids lack the dexterity or ability to brush effectively on their own until they are between the ages of 7 and 10. Finally, we want to see your child brushing twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Remember to always supervise your child when they’re brushing. Your child’s oral health is always our top priority! Schedule your appointment today! If you’d like to learn more dental health tips for your kiddo and help them get the dental care they need, schedule your appointment today. We’re here to help!

Visits to the Dentist Whether you love or loathe going to the dentist, you know a visit every six months for a checkup is a good idea. If you’re like us, we can snap our fingers and instantly think of five other things we’d rather do, but we go anyway because we always leave with a broad smile and healthier teeth. To make our visits the best they can be, quality dental professionals dentists, hygienists and dental assistants adhere consistently to cleanliness procedures (...hand washing, for example). They also always wear dental safety glasses regularly since they know Eye Safety in a Dental Office is a must. Partnering With Professionals What can we as patients do to partner with our dental professionals in their efforts to promote a healthy and safe environment for the care of our teeth? Dentist and Patient Wearing Safety Glasses Wear safety eyewear during dental care. Request safety glasses or bring your own. Refrain from visiting the dentist when you’re sick. From small cold to the stomach flu, dental work can wait until you’re better. Try not to touch more than is necessary. Keep your germs to yourself, and avoid picking up germs from others as possible. Tell your dentist about any cold sores or cuts in your mouth. Your dentist and hygienist will do their best to avoid aggravating it as well as the germs the sore contains. Brush and floss before your visit. A clean mouth is not only excellent hygiene, but it gives your dentist a clearer picture of your dental health. While a healthy and safe dental office is the responsibility of dental professionals, patients can partner with them in that effort. It really only takes some straightforward approaches such as those listed above

We have a wonderful new hygienist joining out team!!! My Name is Kelly Newbury, and I'm excited to join Plaza Dental Clinic as their newest full time hygienist. I graduated from Niagara College in Ontario 15 years ago, and have since taken additional training at the University of Alberta. After taking a few years away from Dental Hygiene to work with my husband in home construction and design, I am excited to be back! I have missed building relationships with clients and the joy of bringing healthy smiles to people’s faces. When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and kids, playing games and golfing. I look forward to meeting you at the clinic.
