Happy Friday! Our new volunteer sign-up form is officially ready to go! Check out the details for the 2021 volunteer opportunities and then visit our website to sign up (just make sure you click on the sign up form under the "Atlantic Program")! https://www.birdscanada.org/bird-science/piping-plover/ The sign up form will help us to get to know you better and make sure we match you with the right opportunities. ... We highly recommend our past and current volunteers fill out the form as well! You don't have to, you can keep doing what you've always done without signing up, but it will make sure all your information is up to date. Birds Canada
Since NS is in lockdown and we're all staying close to home why not join the online screening of "Monty and Rose" and a Q&A with the director, thanks to the Toronto Bird Festival. Monty and Rose tells the story of the first pair of Piping Plover's to nest in Chicago since 1955! Don't forget to register online to save your spot.
Happy Mother's Day!
Today is World Migratory Bird Day! Piping Plovers are considered medium distance migrants. Plovers breeding here in Nova Scotia spend their winter anywhere from North Carolina all the way to the Bahamas- that's a lot of exercise! That's why it's important to give them lots of space, they need a quiet place to recuperate from their trip and raise a family in peace. Check out more info and events around World Migratory Bird Day: https://www.migratorybirdday.org/ Birds Canada
THEY'RE BACK! Well actually Piping Plovers have been back on our beaches for almost a month now. This time of year many of them haven't settled on which beach they want to nest on so they may show up at all sorts of places that we don't usually monitor. You can help by reporting sightings and following these tips. These don't only help Piping Plovers, but all sorts of other birds, animals, plants and anything else that calls the beach home!
Birds Canada has some of the best volunteers around! Many of our volunteers even help out with multiple programs. There are several ways you can be involved in Atlantic Canada. Check out more opportunities on our website: https://www.birdscanada.org/you-can-help/citizen-science/ or head on over to the specific program pages: Maritimes SwiftWatch Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas... We are loving all the interest we are getting about volunteering this summer! Last year most of our volunteer and citizen science work was cancelled due to Covid-19. This year we are cautiously optimistic we can proceed, though we are keeping a close eye on the situation and will do what we need to do to keep our volunteers safe. On Friday, we will be opening up our NEW volunteer sign-up form for anyone interested in volunteering this summer. Stay tuned for more details about the different volunteer opportunities and a link to the sign-up form! And for our current volunteers- don't worry! You can keep doing what you've always done
