These can be any adult including partner, doula, mother, friend etc. Designated support people are allowed to leave the unit and return ONCE per day. (This includes breaks for smoking.) The secondary support person can stay for labour and up to 4 hours postpartum. Postpartum: Postpartum patients may have one of their designated support people with them at all times. The midwives at Plum would like to wish all of the families we’ve worked with this year a snuggly and safe holiday season. Although we aren’t able to have a gathering together this year, we celebrate each and every new birth and new family created! Thank you Regula for stringing a little red tag with the name of every Plum baby born this year onto our tree and making us smile this month.

It is said that women in labour leave their bodies... they travel to the stars to collect the souls of their babies, and return to this world together." - Anonymous Sure rings true for this baby!

Hi friends! On Tuesday night I will be hosting what I believe will be a very special and amazing event. It will be an intimate exploration of Indigenous ways of... knowing and traditional practices in birth and birth work. I have the immense pleasure to have three women join me for their story-telling. This opportunity came to fruition following research that I began pursuing while studying obstetrics, pediatrics, and gynaecology (women’s and children’s health) in medical school along with my dear friend and colleague Abdullah Al-Ani. It feel as though the stars have lined up really nicely. I have had the great pleasure to be introduced to countless folks through my studies and exploring. The three women joining on Tuesday are some of the very special ones. They are Indigenous birth workers and story-keepers - Jessie Fiddler-Kiss and Alycia Two Bears. Jessie and Alycia will share stories of their experience, learning, and practices with us. The third guest is an extra special person in my life: Grandma Doreen Spence. She is an Elder based in Calgary. Grandma Doreen is the epitome of what I envision medicine being. In fact, my favourite description of all the evening’s guests is that they are medicine cleverly disguised as people. Grandma Doreen’s work and life is a clear testament to this. Grandma Doreen was one Elder who helped draft the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). She has worked directly with Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Grandma Doreen sat on the International Council of Elders - representing Indigenous communities worldwide. Not surprisingly, maybe, Grandma Doreen was awarded the Order of Canada, the Alberta Human Rights Award and....just wow (WOW!), Grandma Doreen has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. To be honest, I am not sure what more to say. There is a lot of good medicine to be shared on the evening. I am excited for the stories they will share! The event is open to and free for everyone and I encourage and welcome you all to attend. Further, please share news of it with your friends, families, and colleagues that may be interested. It will be held over Zoom from 8-930pm MT. The link to the event is: https://ucalgary.zoom.us/j/92398860121 The password is ‘waspison’.
