Port McNeill Fire Rescue 30.12.2020

Today we received our Paratech Highway support and lifting strut kit. This kit can be used to stabilize and lift pretty much everything that travels on our highway, as well as many other rescue applications. This was made possible through generous donations from Western Forest Products Mowi Canada West MosaicForests and Lemare Lake Logging.

Hi everyone, The sense of community in the North Island is one of the highlights of working at the Port McNeill Detachment. You look out for your neighbours, c...heck on stranded motorists, and call Police when needed. We attempt to respond to all calls in a timely manner with our primary constraint being the logistics of our enormous Detachment area. We provide Police coverage to Port McNeill, Sointula, Woss, Zeballos, Kyuquot, and all points in between. We are saying all of this to make one request: Don’t be afraid to call 9-1-1! Call 9-1-1 when immediate action is required, such as when someone’s health, safety, or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress. Some examples of In Progress situations include coming upon a motor vehicle collision, observing/following an erratic/unsafe driver (pull over first!), or witnessing a person acting suspiciously. We can understand the reluctance to call 9-1-1 when you think something is not serious enough. However, if it is happening now (i.e. in progress), call 9-1-1 right away instead of our non-emergency line. This allows a dispatcher to obtain the details and advise Police directly by radio, which prevents unnecessary delays. We hope this makes sense! Tomorrow, we will have some news about our new online reporting system we are rolling out. Thanks for reading and sharing!

Just a heads up to all the trick or treaters coming to the fire hall. We’ve set up our treat station behind the hall so we’ll see you there!

Unfortunately, the annual Halloween fireworks show has been cancelled in Port McNeill for this year. But on the positive side, members of the Port McNeill Fire Department will be handing out candy to all the trick or treaters that come to the hall from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on the 31st. Measures to keep everyone safe will be in place, and parking will not be available at the hall, so please don’t bring your vehicles. We hope to see everyone there. Happy Halloween!

Starting off fire prevention week a little early. The weather looks fairly nice this weekend it's the perfect opportunity to get up and clean that chimney before the temperature drops. Here are a few tips for getting the job done and for burning wood safely in your woodstove. 1. Put ashes into a metal bucket and dispose of properly. 2. Wear a mask while cleaning.... 3. Outside Chimneys run colder than inside one therefor build up more creosote and need to be cleaned more often. 4. Cleaning your chimney from the bottom is safer and easier but you still need to clean the top cap as well. 5. Check your fire bricks for cracks and the seal around the door. 6. Burn dry wood. Burning wet wood will cause more creosote. 7. Clean and check your chinney regularly. There is no perfect schedule for cleaning it depends on the wood your burning and the chinney layout. 8. Have a fire extinguisher close to the woodstove. 9. Check all visible seams in your chimney for discoloration or rust. 10. Have your fireplace/woodstove inspected and approved by a professional.

A reminder to everyone travelling the highways. Slippery roads will be upon us soon, give yourself extra time to reach your destination and have your vehicle well prepared.

Ok all, this is the wrong time of year for this to be happening. You want to have a big party by the looks of the amount of empties that people were cleaning up after you thats fine, but put your fire out. This was a very large and very hot fire. Given the winds that were picking up, it was a recipe for disaster with all the dry grass around. Even our neighboring fire departments are having to deal with this. Please do your part and fully extinguish your campfires.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Chris Stewart. Although he never wore fire gear he was definitely part of our team and family. The great memories and joy he brought to the kids and the community at Christmas as Santa will be forever treasured. Chris was a huge advocate for the fire dept and was always helping us with ways to fundraise and increase membership. He was an incredible man, a pillar of the community and will be greatly missed Our thoughts are with Karen, Megan and the rest of the Stewart clan.

Last night at 21:00 we were called out to an unattended garbage fire at Beach Camp we would like to remind everyone that 7 mile landfill is open and it is the appropriate place for unwanted items.

Port McNeill Fire Rescue 15.07.2020

At around 1630 our crews were dispatched to a 2 vehicle MVI at the T. As always Port McNeill RCMP and BCAS did an incredible job. There were no serious injuries and thanks to Island Thunder Towing the roads were cleared quickly. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and remind everyone to pull over for emergency vehicles.

Hi everyone! Let’s talk birthday parades! As we adapt to the COVID-19 new normal, being able to help our neighbors celebrate milestones has been a lot of fun.... Unfortunately, as the popularity and participation numbers for these parades have increased, some concerning observations have been made. To that end, basic road safety rules apply, including wearing seatbelts and not occupying the back of pickups. It will only take one small incident to turn this into a tragedy. We don’t want to rain on any parades. (See what I did there?) We want to participate in them, not enforce them. Stay safe and have fun!

Tonight just before 8:00pm our crew was dispatched for mutual aid with Hyde Creek Volunteer Fire Dept to help find the source of that explosion felt throughout our communities. It was determined that the cause was an industrial blast detonated behind Twin Peaks.
