The city of Port Coquitlam has always been closely tied to our railway. In fact, it is where our city began. Built just west of the Coquitlam River in 1885, Westminster Junction Station was located at the intersection of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline and its spur line to the city of New Westminster. The community that grew up around the junction was later incorporated as Port Coquitlam over 108 years ago in 1913. Have you ever stopped to think about who built th...is railway that is so important to our city? Chinese workers were an essential part of the workforce in BC. They came by ship mainly from China and California when construction began in 1881, and by completion of the CPR in 1885, at least 600 of the over 15,000 Chinese labourers had died of work-related illness or injury. Conditions were harsh, unsafe, and made even worse by racial discrimination. Chinese workers were often given the most dangerous tasks and their pay was unequal, making only $1 a day, not including provisions, for every $1.50-$2.50 that white workers made. The transcontinental railway they helped to build, despite the hardship and discrimination they faced, made movement across the country cheap and accessible. It was the reason for our city to incorporate, and it played a major role in shaping British Columbia and Canada as a whole. To learn more about their stories and the many contributions Chinese railway workers have made to Canada, check out some of the links below for more information. https://www.mhso.ca/tiesthatbind/ChineseRailWorkers.php http://www.virtualmuseum.ca//ViewLoitDa.do;jsessionid=E122 https://www.coquitlamheritage.ca//the-legacy-of-chinese-ra Photo from Wikimedia Commons #poco #portcoquitlam #britishcolumbia #heritage #AsianHeritageMonth City of Port Coquitlam Nancy McCurrach Proud Port Coquitlam City Councillor

Happy #InternationalMuseumDay! The theme this year is "The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine", and museums everywhere are being invited to reflect on and rethink the ways in which we create and communicate. The COVID-19 crisis has been a catalyst for digital innovations across the cultural sector, and PoCo Heritage is no exception! We've partnered with The VR Voyage to bring you an interactive, virtual tour of our temporary exhibit "The F Words: Flu, Fire, Flood, and F...inancial Fears". Didn't get a chance to visit us before our doors closed? Now you can explore the exhibit from the comfort of home, and listen to Museum Manager Alex Code as he guides you through the troubled, early years of Port Coquitlam. Today we say goodbye to our Museum Coordinator, Kanchan Lal. This past year she has been an invaluable asset to PoCo Heritage, steering us through these troubling times. During her time here Kanchan has been responsible for new exhibits, programs, and events, but her passion has always been programming. In pursuit of this passion she has accepted a position with the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Although we are saying goodbye Kanchan, we hope to see you around and we wish you all the best!
