Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Be Specific Have you ever listened to someone attempt to present a thought or idea only to get distracted by tangential thought? It's a common experience to carry the flow of a conversation, but when giving a speech, and you are the sole person presenting your topic, straying too far and too often from the topic muddies your message. Toastmasters recommends trying to keep your speeches and discussions to the topic on point. Don't convolute your ...message with too many stories that stray from the original purpose. Please email us at [email protected] for further information. We look forward to seeing you at our open house tomorrow! #toastmasters #selfimprovement #growth #publicspeaking #leadership

Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Embrace Your Unique Style. We all come from different backgrounds and different experiences. In doing so, we all have naturally different ways of communicating. This adds to the diversity we all bring and we cannot expect that we will present the exact same way as someone else. Toastmasters recommends not copying the style or gestures of other speakers, as your audience will sense a lack of authenticity. Be yourself; no one does that better than... you can. Interested in learning more? Join us for one of our meetings where we practice our public speaking and leadership skills! Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Use Humor When Things Go Wrong. As much as we practice, things can still go wrong. Sometimes an audience isn't receptive to something we've said or we fumble on our way across the stage. Using humor to help diffuse any tension helps bring your audience back on your side. Toastmasters recommends telling a quick joke when something goes wrong to put you and your audience at ease. For example, if the lights go out, a good joke might be: ""Who forgo...t to pay the electricity bill?"" Interested in learning more? Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Enjoy Yourself. Public speaking isn't meant to be scary. It's meant to give you the opportunity to share your knowledge and your ideas with others in a way that enlightens and inspires them. When speaking, no matter the topic, make it personal so you enjoy it and your audience connects with it. Toastmasters recommends choosing a topic on something that is important to you and that you feel passionate about. Your commitment to the topic will help... sell the speech to your audience. Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Visualize Success Sometimes our nerves can get the better of us. Our negative self-talk clouds over us and we imagine the worst of ourselves when we're about to go up on stage in front of a whole new audience. It's scary! Toastmasters recommends you imagine yourself giving your speech where your voice is loud and clear and confident. Imagine hearing the audience's applause - it will boost your confidence. Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Pace Yourself. We've all felt the trembling nervousness that comes with early public speaking. Even seasoned Toastmasters can tell you they still get a little nervous. Learning how to pace yourself while nervous helps you stick to your allotted time and helps your audience clearly understand your oration. Toastmasters recommends practicing your speech at a calm steady pace as people tend to rush when they're nervous. Practicing in front of multiple and varied audiences also helps hone this skill. #toastmasters #selfimprovement #growth #publicspeaking #leadership

Toastmasters Tip of the Week: Time Yourself. There is a big reason we assign times to our toastmasters speeches. Often when public speaking you'll be given a set amount of time to present your topic. By rehearsing to specific times, your ability to understand exactly how long you are speaking increases. Event organizers always appreciate when a speaker stays within their allotted time. Toastmasters recommends timing your speech every time you rehearse it to ensure a timely speech. #toastmasters #selfimprovement #growth #publicspeaking #leadership

She inadvertantly hid the imaginitive and vivacious speaking style we discovered she had as she became more comfortable with us as her audience.
