The hide tanning resurgence is profound on so many levels. From what I have learned about the process (as an observer), there are so many layers of important teachings that go into tanning a hide, not to mention the very real hard labour... The next time you see a pair of moccasins or anything made from home tanned hide, please consider the time, knowledge and cultural significance of this practice. And the value cannot begin to be measured in dollars.

A brand new public art initiative has launched in Nunavut for Nunnavummiut! I’m working on this with my colleague Inga Petri, of Strategic Moves, who was asked to design the mechanics of the program, as one of the GN responses to the hardships faced by artists due to COVID-19. https://www.gov.nu.ca//gn-launches-nunavut-public-art-init... Help spread the word - proposals submitted before Sept 1 will be considered for funding via peer review process.

I love this - artistically speaking, it’s a potent way to connect listeners to Indigenous language and culture in a uniquely sensory way - but perhaps more importantly, are the words from the projects founder, Kijâtai Veillette-Cheezo: maybe with these videos we can feel these words, and feel the language... and feel safe. Feel words, smell words, taste them...

The YFN Arts Brand will share the work and stories of many incredible artists within Yukon’s 14 First Nations. Working with YFNCT on this project has been my favourite part of 2020, so far!
