OHIP only covers half the cost of an eye exam, and optometrists subsidize the remaining 50%. This chronic under-funding, coupled with the devastating impact of COVID-19 on optometrists' ability to see patients, threatens Ontarians' access to these essential health services. As you are likely aware, our government is taking significant measures to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus strain. Our governing regulatory body, the College of Optometrists of Ontario, have taken heed to representatives from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and have decided at this time to suspend all non-essential eye care services until at least March 29th, 2020. This decision has been made to help prevent the spread of the virus and protect our pa...tients, staff and the community during this serious public health threat. For those who experience emergency visual symptoms such as a sudden decrease in vision, injury to one or both eyes, or sudden light flashes and floaters, please contact our emergency email: [email protected]. We will be in touch with you regarding the provision of urgent eye care. We must work together during this uncertain and challenging time. Please continue to observe the recommendations set forth by our public health officials regarding travel, hand washing, and social distancing, as well as any further updates that may arise.
