Dear Fellow Investor; Third quarter market results were overwhelmingly positive both here in Canada and around the world. Apparently geopolitical rumbles and natural disasters couldn’t keep stocks down. The Canadian market (TSX) was up 3% over the quarter led by energy, which was up a whopping 10% due to a 12% rise in the price of crude. The U.S. S&P500 was up 4% but emerging markets led the way with an 8% increase.... Investors are seeing decent earnings growth in corporates with little sign of a near term recession. Consumer confidence remains buoyant and business investment intentions are rising. Bond markets both here and abroad were fairly flat throughout the quarter as central bank tightening (raising interest rates) began to take hold. The bottom line is, politics matters but investors need to be able to tune out the noise and concentrate on the outlook for company profits, which by all accounts look favourable.
