Shawville, July 20, 2020 The Pontiac Museum opened for the summer on July 15 with Coronavirus (COVID-19) preventive measures for workers’ and visitors’ health and safety. Two local high school students will spend the summer working at the museum as assistant curators. With financial support from the Canada Summer Jobs and the Young Canada Works programs of the Government of Canada, the Pontiac Historical Society, which runs the museum, was able to hire the two students to ...work with its volunteers on a wide range of museum activities. Arianne Gionet-Laflèche (15) of Bristol is a student at École secondaire Sieur-de-Coulonge, and William Gray (16) of Shawville goes to Pontiac High School. Both have a keen interest in history, and will get experience in behind-the-scenes museum work such as researching, acquiring, cataloguing and preserving historical artifacts, and preparing exhibits. They will also work with visitors to the museum, by serving as guides and interpreters. The museum has adopted special preventive measures because of the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the health and safety of staff and visitors. Only two persons or one household may visit the museum at a time and everyone, staff and visitors, must maintain physical distancing of 2 metres and wear a mask at all times. Hand sanitizing is mandatory at the entrance and visitors are requested not to touch any artifacts or surfaces. The Pontiac Museum, located in the old railway station building at 210 Lake Street in Shawville, is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm Wednesday through Sunday until the end of August. Rescued from demolition by a group of concerned citizens, the railway station is a Shawville landmark that dates from the late 1880’s. It was officially opened in 1976 as the Pontiac Museum, dedicated to preserving historical artifacts of local and regional interest, and making them available to the public. Locally, opportunities for young people to learn about and work in the heritage sector are limited. The Pontiac Historical Society’s summer jobs program provides a way for students in the Pontiac to work in a field to which they might not otherwise have access, and to gain direct experience which may help them decide, and perhaps inspire them, to pursue a career as museum professionals.
The Pontiac Historical society is hiring students! If you are a full time student and interested in summer work please contact Glenn @ (819)647-2535 thanks.
