Jean here - my suggestion for today is Making Flippy Floppy by Talking Heads. In early 1984 I moved from St John’s, Newfoundland to Austin, Texas. Right around then the concert movie Stop Making Sense was making the rounds of the rep theatres. In St. John’s I’d been pretty immersed in the trad rock scene but I guess I was ready for a change ‘cause Stop Making Sense blew my head wide open. The strange mix of funk and new wave, David Byrne’s weird costumes and body movements, Tina Weymouth on bass, the incredible back-up singers... I loved the whole show but Making Flippy Floppy stands out for its funky groove and lyrical weirdness. Kill the beast - kill it! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa98AhEVAZQ

Jean here, jumping in on the Pop Machine Picks post. I cut my musical teeth on my oldest sister's collection of Joan Baez, Judi Collins and Joni Mitchell albums. But I somehow wasn't aware of Laura Nyro until a friend turned me on to her about 20 years ago. It was love at first listen. Her songs are complex and quirky, often catchy and always compelling. As a singer, she is just astounding. I love this tune, Sweet Blindness, for its exuberance and sass. (Longtime followers of the band may remember that one of our former incarnations was called Sweet Blindness, with John Lang on keys and Di Latchford on acoustic guitar and vocals. We had the chutzpah to play this song as well as a number of other Laura Nyro tunes. Maybe we will again...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZFD7gH1mJg

Hi everyone, so in case you haven't heard, the Black Horse show on March 28 has been cancelled. We're disappointed but this is the smart thing to do. We're also thinking of Desmond and the rest of the Black Horse staff, all the patrons and all our fellow musicians out there in these trying times. When this is all cleared up, we'll be back for a great big party to celebrate. Until then, stay safe!
