"The world's second biggest country by landmass is effectively running out of space, and that has Canada on course for a reckoning. The dream of a detached home and a piece of land, which generations of Canadians have taken for granted, and which continues to entice new immigrants, may soon be out of reach in the places where people want to live."

Today, on #BiodiversityDay2021, make sure to call on your government to address human population growth to protect the plant's amazing biodiversity.

Population Institute Canada 28.05.2021

A loss of biodiversity is a loss for humanity. It’s pointless to talk about today being the #internationaldayforbiologicalDiversity if we’re not addressing human overpopulation. Our exploding human numbers in the past century have resulted in pollution, land and sea degradation, habitat loss, species overexploitation and climate change all of which are having catastrophic impacts on our planet’s wildlife, oceans, plants and their numbers. What will you do to take action against overpopulation and ensure a safe, healthy planet for future generations?

WWF-Canada's Living Planet Report 2020 shows wildlife populations in Canada are in serious and significant decline, and the numbers for at-risk species - those protected by law - are just as bad, if not worse. Although Canada has the image of being a land of wide, open spaces, we now know, thanks to reports like these, that our country is in the midst of a real wildlife loss problem. Our human population is concentrated in cities and towns within close range of the Canadian-...American border, and sprawl continues to move into greenspace across the land. Meanwhile, every extra new person who arrives, whether by birth or through immigration, requires vast amounts of resources that have to be extracted, grown, mined and built. If we're serious about protecting wildlife and biodiversity in Canada, then the very real issue of human population growth and the consumption that goes with living has to become a part of the discussion. Please help us spread awareness of this important issue by sharing with your community on this #EndangeredSpeciesDay. See more

We love owls! Let's do our part to ensure they continue to thrive in North America by limiting growth and sprawl.

Several of the world's richest nations contribute very little to global family planning funding. It's time for governments to recognise that investing in reproductive healthcare is crucial for solving our biggest crises. Please sign and share this @PopulationMatters petition urging the G20 Leaders to commit adequate funding to the UNFPA and end the unmet contraceptive needs of 270 million women and girls. https://populationmatters.org/urge-g20-leaders-fund-family-

Trump’s agenda has turbocharged Kenya’s nascent anti-abortion movement, which is working to add more limitations to the country’s already stringent laws. https://www.motherjones.com//trump-gag-rule-abortion-ken/

We love getting feedback from our members, but it’s not often we get letters telling us our reading material cheers them up! So we were pleasantly surprised to receive this in our inbox. Our aim is to educate, inform, and get people talking about this taboo subject before it’s too late because the more we can get it on people’s radar, the faster we can create a movement for change. Why, in the middle of a climate crisis, a housing crisis and record unemployment levels during a pandemic are we planning to bring more than a million more people into the country over the next three years?

Hallowe'en isn't all that's on our minds today. It also happens to be World Cities Day and we invite you to join us in recognizing that a bigger city isn’t always a better city. World Cities Day’s overarching theme is Better City, Better Life with this year’s sub theme of ‘Valuing Our Communities and Cities." Valuing our communities and cities means striving to make them more liveable, not bigger. https://urbanoctober.unhabitat.org/wcd

But there also needs to be a "seismic shift" in every country's willingness to address their consumption and population growth and the role both of these play in pandemics and other environmental catastrophes.

Thanks to Population Matters for posting these reflections on why the decision to have a small family (or indeed, no children of one's own) is so important to consider in these times.

More and more often scientists are warning that humans have had/are having a devastating impact on other species. The LEAST we can do to help them out is normalize the idea that smaller families are better for the planet. https://www.zmescience.com//more-mammal-species-face-exti/

A huge shout out to our patrons who support us in raising awareness of the ecological consequences of continuing population growth. It’s a topic politicians and many environmentalists won’t touch, but it doesn’t mean it’s not real, https://populationinstitutecanada.ca/about-us/our-patrons/
