In celebration of this evening’s CBC presentation of Still Standing we thought we’d share this Vittoria piece from the Norfolk County collection. This commemora...tive sugar bowl is made of basalt. It is a souvenir of the Duke Wellington. One exterior side of the bowl is decorated with a motif depicting the crowning of the Duke. The other side is marked with lettering that reads, India Portugal & Spain Vittoria 21st June 1813 This was owned and donated by Mrs. L.C. Wadsworth of Simcoe, ON. Today would have been the opening of the 2020 rendition of the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show. While we can't be there in person to enjoy all this annual c...elebration has to offer, Norfolk County Heritage and Culture will be posting all week from a historic perspective. We hope you enjoy these heritage snapshots. The history of the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show dates back to 1840 when the Talbot District Agricultural Society was first established. In 1852, the name was changed to Norfolk County Agricultural Society. Traditionally, opening day at the fair is celebrated with Young Canada Day. Elementary and secondary school students are admitted free and enjoy a day at the fair with friends and family. Gathering at the grandstand, students participate in races, cheerleading and tug of war competitions. Their enthusiastic school spirit can be heard blocks away from the fairground. By including students in this annual agricultural celebration, the Norfolk County Agricultural Society has ensured the ongoing and sustainable success of this Norfolk County institution. It is a family tradition for many. Thank you to the many, many volunteers, members, sponsors, staff, community organizations and local businesses and attendees. You have contributed to a vital Norfolk County celebration that each October reminds us of our rural roots. It's #fishtugFriday! The Stuart B was built in 1928 in Port Dover. Originally owned by Harry Brown, the boat was named for his son, Stuart. The first photo is of a page from the log book of the Stuart B dated April 8th, 1959. The flag locations, details of the nets and species caught are noted. The second image is from January 15th, 1942 of the Stuart B docked beside an RCAF training target on Lake Erie. Throughout World War II, pilots in training would drop practice bombs on these targets.

Welcome to Norfolk County Heritage and Culture's Virtual Sunset Service. The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1931. Every November 11th sinc...e, Canadians have paused in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. This is our way of honouring those from Norfolk who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice. We are remembering 405 men and one woman who lost their lives defending our freedom. We have projected each of Norfolk's fallen onto the Norfolk War Memorial, Carillon Tower. Names will appear in alphabetical order. We will remember them.

The outhouse. At one time a common site but now very few remain. The outhouse was a little building, four or five feet square. They were frames with two-by-four...s and boarded over on the outside. Many had peaked roofs while others had a single slope roof. A door for privacy also kept the elements at bay. Inside, there was a bench that ran the full width of the structure. A hole or sometimes more than one was cut into the bench. Under the bench was a pit. Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum has a four-holer in its collection. This raises some questions! Recently, we discovered this Norfolk County outhouse. Can you guess it’s location? A jigsaw puzzle from Norfolk County Heritage & Culture! Enjoy.

Port Dover Harbour Museum 04.08.2020

It's been a little while, but Norfolk County Heritage & Culture is pleased to bring back Saturday jigsaw puzzles. This week's puzzle is from a postcard in our collection (990.6.9). Minnie sent this postcard to her friend Rob, in Brantford. The back reads, "Dear Rob, We were down to the dock to see the boat out this morning. See if you can pick us out on this card. Will write in a day or two. ... Minnie" The passenger ferry in the postcard is the Olcott, built in 1901. It retired from it's Lake Erie route in 1916 and was converted to a seagoing tug. Then it was sold and moved to France. During WWII, it was captured and commandeered as a service vessel for the German navy. https://www.jigsawplanet.com/?rc=play&pid=0de8d4847007 This information is from our fundraising book, "Port Dover: A Pictorial Journey Through 200 Years of Port Dover History."

It's #fishtugfriday and today we are sharing this amazing photo from the 1920s. The photograph is dated August 25, 1925 on the back and the tugs are the Rambler and the Altawandron. In 1928, the Altawandron was stuck in ice, off the tip of Long Point, for 11 days! Captain John. E. Matthews and deck hand Leslie Murphy walked across the frozen lake to Port Rowan to call for help and to pick up supplies. This story is featured in our newly redesigned exhibits in our net shanty. We hope you'll visit when we re-open.
