Until we have sufficient community immunity, help reduce the burden on the health-care system by not gathering indoors with people we don’t live with, avoiding all non-essential travel by staying local, and staying home when sick. Your efforts to stick to these principles are a show of support for our frontline workers. And they need all that support more than ever right now.

PRESS RELEASE: Fire at Town Park Apartments - January 17, 2021 Subject: Port Hardy Fire Rescue responds to fire at Town Park Apartments after multiple calls to ...911 and reports of people jumping from windows. Closed hallway doors limit fire spread to single hallway. Fire remains under investigation. At approximately 2330hrs Sunday evening, fire crews were paged to a report of a structure fire at Town Park Apartments, with dispatch reports of multiple calls to 911 and people jumping from windows. Within minutes, Fire Chief Borg and Deputy Chief Texmo arrived on scene and identified an active fire on the second floor and multiple persons requiring medical attention. Incoming units were instructed to mount a rapid fire attack, while Port McNeill Fire Rescue was paged for mutual aid support and additional ambulances were directed to the scene. Ladder 17 arrived on scene shortly after and quickly initiated a fire attack, with teams making entry to the second floor to search for the seat of the fire. Attack teams found an active fire within the second floor hallway and worked to extinguish the flames and lingering hotspots with handlines and thermal imaging cameras. Meanwhile, additional incoming units and apparatus were directed to begin a rapid primary search of units on all three floors to confirm all persons were out of the building. In addition, ventilation was established to clear the building of smoke and heat. Unfortunately, the building sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage and residents are being supported by Emergency Social Services at this time. However, and thankfully, the burn area largely was contained to the second-floor hallway, and despite the significant heat generated by this fire, most units suffered only some smoke and water damage and avoided direct fire damage. Last night's call is a perfect example of the fire prevention lesson on closed doors: as illustrated in the attached photo, closing a bedroom door or a door to a suite during a fire can significantly help in limiting fire spread and damage. Many times, the best action to take during a fire is to close the door and place a towel at the bottom. This can help to maintain the viability of a room while firefighters arrive and work to establish ladders for rescue, preventing the need for jumping. At this time the cause of the fire is uncertain and remains under investigation. Anyone with knowledge or information about this incident is asked to contact Port Hardy RCMP at 250-949-6335. First and foremost a big thank you to our crews for their work through the night on this call - of the 30 members we had on scene, most did not clean up and return home to bed until 4am, having to get up a few hours later to go to work. Second, a big thank you to our mutual aid support from Port McNeill Fire Rescue - their six sets of hands on scene last night helped make much easier work. Third, a thank you to BCEHS, RCMP, and BC Hydro for their support on scene, as always. And finally, a thanks to our ESS team in Port Hardy for helping all persons displaced by this fire. As we continue to navigate this pandemic and these challenging times, Port Hardy Fire is always here for the community.
