Another fine example of a kobudo demonstration that I found as I was going through my old video collection. This one being performed by Sensei Kaz Hashimoto in 1994 at the Karate BC Provincials. ... Sensei Hashimoto is one of the finest karate athletes/competitors to have ever represented Canada and B.C. Amongst his many athletic accomplishments - Two-time Canadian National Championships Grand Champion, Four-time Canadian Men’s Kata Champion, Three-time Canadian Men’s Kumit...e Champion in his weight class - and this is for all-styles karate championships. ... This was perhaps the best tonfa demo I've ever seen - and many good karate movement principles can be seen in the way Sensei Hashimoto moves. Sensei Hashimoto is Seikokai International Chief Instructor and Chief Instructor of the well-known Kingsway Odokan Shito-Ryu dojo, (formerly Kingsway Shito Ryu). ... _________________________________________________________ See more

Remembering C.W. Nicol Those who know me know that I would not normally make Facebook posts regarding a person’s personal matters, such as births, deaths, family matters, love life, etc... I can barely use Facebook as it is... But today I thought I’d make mention of the recent passing of C.W. Nicol. Lots has been written about him in Japan he was well-known as an author, naturalist, environmentalist, adventurer, educator, etc., but he also played a huge role concerning m...y study of Shotokan karate in the 1980s. Because of him, I was able to persist and endure through some arduous times in the dojo. He wrote the karate classic Moving Zen which chronicled his experiences in Japan in the early 1960’s while in pursuit of the art of karate-do. (The book was first published in 1975, and was a must read for any serious martial artist in the following couple of decades) I won’t get into his story here, (you’ll have to read the book yourselves), but his book inspired me to pack up and move to Denver to train under Master Yaguchi back in the 80’s. Reading about what C.W. Nicol went through while training at the infamous JKA Headquarters in Tokyo gave me the inspiration, courage, and strength to somehow endure the training at the JKA Mountain States Headquarters in Colorado. Today, C.W. Nicol is more renowned for his work for the environment and humanity, but he still practiced karate on his own, and kept the karate spirit within him. I’ve met him a few times briefly over the years, (as his daughter, Miwako, is a good friend of mine and was kind enough to make introductions), and the last time he was in Vancouver I was fortunate enough to have a couple drinks with him however, I was always feeling a little too awestruck in his presence to ask much about his karate experiences one of my regrets... For his dedication to the environment, and for all of his other contributions to humanity and the natural world we all share, he will be missed. I am now reading Moving Zen again, and remembering Nicol-san. -Takishita
Master Y. Yaguchi Clinic - Port Moody dojo, 2014 With Master Yaguchi visiting the dojo soon, (March 19-22, 2020 - [note: postponed due to covid19] ), I thought I'd post this video of his visit in 2014. Video was filmed by a visiting karateka from Serbia.
Was going through my old videos and came across this exceptional example of a traditional bo kata being demonstrated by Sensei Tak Sameshima at the Karate BC Provincials of 1994. ... Sensei Takayuki Sameshima is currently hachi-dan, (8th dan) and the Chief Instructor of Canadian Gima-Ha Shotokan Karate. He teaches regularly at the White Rock Gima-Ha dojo. I'll try to post another kobudo, (weapons), demonstration next week...
