A sincere THANK YOU to the people of Scugog Township, Durham Region, the province of Ontario, and of all of Canada for your dedication to the battle against Cov...id 19. We know that without the perseverance and sacrifice of each and every one of us, the rate of transmission of Covid 19, left unchecked, would be much worse. There are more difficult times ahead, but so far, we have been successful in slowing the rate of transmission and preventing our health care system from becoming overwhelmed. That is an accomplishment that we all share. We are in this together. Thank you for your continued support of public health advice. We just cant thank you enough.

Did you know that about 1/5 people are dissatisfied with their sleep and 40% of Canadians report at least 1 symptom of insomnia!? Unfortunately, having a restless sleep can put you at a higher risk of injuring yourself. Research shows you are almost 2 times more likely to injure yourself if you have less than 8 hours of sleep, and over 5 times more likely to have other general health problems. Additionally, it is shown that 50-70 percent of patients with chronic pain also hav...e poor sleeping patterns. All that being said, it is no surprise that sleep is important for living a healthy life but it can also help you heal faster too! Our bodies take the time during sleep to repair tissues and restore itself, serving like a clean-up crew on their night shift. The more you sleep, the better job the body will do. So although you may have already developed a condition, it is not too late to do your part in optimizing your healing time! Focusing on your quality of sleep will not only make you feel better, but it will also enhance the positive effects of our physiotherapy treatment plan. Dont know where to start? Here are some ways that may help you work towards getting a better sleep: - Try to limit the amount of blue light or screen-time in the evening and before bed - Meditation is a great way to help relax and ease your mind before bed - White noise apps! - Exercise - Develop a sleep routine and stick to it! See the links below for further information. If you or someone you know needs physiotherapy, give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to schedule an appointment today. Physiotherapy assessment and treatment is covered under your private insurance plan and may be covered under OHIP for those under the age of 19 and over the age of 65.

Ever wonder why us physiotherapists are always getting you to move? The list of benefits of movement and physical activity is lengthy and the evidence is undeniable, ranging from bone health to mental health and everything in between. From a treatment perspective, being active allows the body to heal faster and stay healthy. When the human body is inactive, our soft tissues holding the body together - such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments- will stiffen and weaken. So when y...ou first get up and get moving, its no wonder you feel sore! However, if you continue to move, it creates tensile loads on your tissues causing them to strengthen, support the body and help you move better. Additionally, those tensile loads on contractile tissues help stimulate bone health, reducing bone density problems in conditions like osteoporosis and improving day-to-day function in conditions like arthritis. The fluid found in our joints serves to lubricate and reduce friction. The more we move around, the better lubricated our joints will be, allowing us to move easier and work like a well oiled machine! Altogether, the many benefits of movement serve to keep us living healthy, and help us reduce our healing time. Movement really is medicine! If you or someone you know needs help getting moving, give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to schedule an appointment today. Physiotherapy assessment and treatment is covered under your private insurance plan and may be covered under OHIP for those under the age of 19 and over the age of 65.

There is a lot that goes into what we, as physiotherapists, look for in your first visit. We ask a lot of questions and it may feel like more of a job interview than a treatment but stay with us! All of these questions have valid reasoning behind them and each one is designed to help us uncover what is causing your distress. Think of it like a game of 21 Questions! At first, the questions start out broad what can we help you with today? These help give us somewhere to sta...rt and a general direction to steer our future inquiries. As we ask more and more questions, we start to narrow our search, usually coming to a consensus of 2 or 3 different possible diagnoses. From our interview we can then test different structures to come to a final conclusion on the main culprit. Physiotherapists often believe that this interview is a vital part in being able to come to reach the right diagnosis, but also understand the reason it may have started in the first place and what we can do to fix it. If you or someone you know needs physiotherapy, give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to schedule an appointment today. Physiotherapy assessment and treatment is covered under your private insurance plan and may be covered under OHIP for those under the age of 19 and over the age of 65.

Aging is inevitable. So why not make the the transition into the golden years more seamless and enjoyable? Often times the first thing we lose as we age is balance. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 elderly Canadians will fall each year as a result of poor balance. Often times the root cause of this balance deficit can come from muscle disuse. With weak muscles and loss of body awareness, we may find ourselves unable to catch our falls. But most falls are preventable!... There are many contributing factors to balance and reducing our risk of falls. Physio is a great option to help you - whether it be training strength, vestibular rehab, or proprioceptive feedback training. Physiotherapists can assess and tailor to your individual needs to get you back functioning independently with confidence increasing your quality of life. Here are some ideas to you can do on your own to help reduce your risk of falling in conjunction with physio: - Use a night light in your room hallways and stairs - Try to limit the number rugs that could be tripped on - Install handrails in stairways and bathrooms - Carry extra salt or sand in your car during the winter to avoid any icy slips See the link below for further information. If you or someone you know needs physiotherapy, give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to schedule an appointment today. Physiotherapy assessment and treatment is covered under your private insurance plan and may be covered under OHIP for those under the age of 19 and over the age of 65.

Did you know that physios can help with invisible injuries as well? Concussions are often considered invisible injuries because the people affected do not typically show obvious signs of physical distress. However, concussions can be just as debilitating as any other injury. Roughly 160,000 individuals in Canada will endure a concussion each year and it is thought that this number could be even higher due to underreporting. In recent years, a lot of attention has been direc...ted towards the severity and handling of these conditions as a result of highly publicized cases. As a result, this led to a better understanding on how to protect your heads and how to manage concussions if you do sustain a blow to the head. Our physiotherapists have many ways of managing concussions including: - education on rest and recovery - helping reduce dizziness by using vestibular rehabilitations techniques - returning you to play by gradually reintroducing activities - providing an exercise program to restore prior function (when the time is right!) At PAPP, our physiotherapists ALSO use a baseline measuring tool called imPACT to measure your cognitive function and balance prior to any injury. These baseline measurements are a great way to compare results taken before and after a head trauma to give us important information for managing our clients recovery and progression over time. If you are interested in being proactive about your brain health and getting a concussion pre-screening, give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to book an appointment today!

Did you know physiotherapists can help treat vertigo, dizziness, and balance problems? Over 35% of Canadians over the age of 40 will experience some type of vestibular (balance) problem in their lifetime. At our clinic, we have multiple therapists who have been trained in vestibular rehabilitation, including a common type of vertigo known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a non-life threatening condition that is characterized by episodes of sudden ver...tigo and dizziness. These episodes occur when the head is moved into certain positions and can be triggered by getting up, rolling in bed, tilting your head, or quick head movements. It is not uncommon for these episodes to start for no particular reason, and are often first noticed upon waking one morning. Vertigo attacks can occur over multiple weeks and can initially last anywhere from 10-60 seconds. It is important to note that BPPV will not cause constant continuous dizziness; if you are feeling this way, your vertigo is likely not BPPV and you should follow up with your family doctor as soon as possible. So what causes BPPV? It has to do with a problem in the inner ear. The inner ear holds fluid-filled canals and separate compartments with small crystals that help maintain your balance. In BPPV, the crystals get dislodged from their compartment and end up in the canal, sending a signal to the brain that the head is moving when it is not. This leads to the vertigo spells you feel with BPPV. The good news is that our physiotherapists are trained to help reposition the crystals back into their separate compartments and people often feel better after just 1 BPPV treatment! Below are two articles for more information on BPPV and how physiotherapy can help! If you or a loved one has been suffering from vertigo, dizziness, or balance problems, including BPPV, come in and see one of our vestibular-trained physiotherapists! Book your assessment today by calling our clinic at (905)-985-8363. https://www.theloop.ca/what-you-need-to-know-about-vertigo/ https://vestibular.org//benign-paroxysmal-positional-verti

Did you know over 4.6 million Canadians have arthritis? Every 60 seconds in Canada someone gets diagnosed with arthritis. Arthritis is often thought to occur in the senior population, however it can occur at any age regardless of past medical history. In women, arthritis is the number one cause of disability in Canada, while it is third for men. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, but the two most common are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Un...fortunately, there is currently no cure for arthritis. OA is commonly known as the wear and tear arthritis. As we age, it is common for the cartilage that protects our joints and prevents our bones from grinding together begins to breakdown. As the cartilage degrades, it is common for individuals to feel stiff, develop pain in the affected joint, and maybe even feel bone on bone grinding. OA is most commonly seen in the hips, knees, spine, and hands. RA is the most common inflammatory type of arthritis. RA can even affect our internal organs. Most common symptoms of RA include hot, swollen, and painful joints. It is not uncommon for the joints to become deformed and swollen. Individuals often notice RA begin in their hands and more specifically on their knuckles. So how can physiotherapy help arthritis? The earlier the intervention the better! Physiotherapy can help slow down the progression of the disease, manage pain, and improve function. Your physiotherapist will most likely prescribe you exercises, provide soft tissue techniques, joint mobilizations, and educate you on how to properly protect your joints. All our physiotherapists are trained to assess and help treat arthritis symptoms. The article below provides more information on how physiotherapy can help you manage your arthritis. Its that time of year again, where the ice, snow, and cold weather can keep us cooped up indoors. This is especially true for the senior population. One of the many reasons seniors tend to stay inside during the winter is fear of falling/slipping on the ice. In fact, 56% of falls in seniors occur while walking around the community and their home, and about 16% of those falls occur while walking on ice or snow. Fear of falling in seniors is common and not only seen in those ...who have previously fallen, but also in those who havent. Research studies have estimated that anywhere from 25% - 85% of seniors are afraid to fall. 1 in 3 Canadian seniors (over the age of 65) will fall each year and 50% of those who fall will suffer some type of moderate to severe trauma. Physiotherapists can provide strategies and exercises to help prevent falls before they happen! One of the biggest components attributing to risk of falling is impaired balance. Did you know that November is Mens Health Awareness Month? 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The good news is advancements in medicine and new treatment development have allowed for higher survival rates. However, this has led to more men reporting symptoms of urinary incontinence, increased urinary urgency, and erectile dysfunction post-prostate surgery. Often the pelvic floor muscles can become weak and/or tight causing muscle ...spasms post surgery. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help with this! A pelvic floor physiotherapist has specialized training to assess, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan to help individuals with dysfunctions occurring in their pelvic floor muscles. Therapy often targets releasing tension from certain muscles while strengthening others to help with pain and inflammation in the pelvic region. Education about the pelvic floor muscles is a vital part of treatment that the physiotherapist will be discussing with you during your initial and subsequent visits. Other treatments will vary from person to person, but can involve use of manual therapy, electrical stimulation, deep breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and many more! You will most likely be sent home with an exercise program to work on in-between appointments. See the news article below for more information about how pelvic floor physiotherapy can help individuals before and after prostate surgery. At our clinic we have a specially trained pelvic floor physiotherapist, Kristal Hazelwood, who would be happy to help with any of your pelvic health needs. Remember, problems with the pelvic floor muscles in men can also be caused by other reasons besides prostate surgery, including chronic prostatitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome, or trauma to the pelvic area. If you or a loved one are experiencing any symptoms listed above give us a call at (905) 985-8363 to book an assessment today! https://physiocanhelp.ca//how-pelvic-floor-physiotherapy-/

Did you know 20-30% of Canadian seniors fall every year?! Falling can have both physical and psychological consequences, which can include hip fracture, depression, and fear of future falls. The good thing is that falling can be easily prevented with awareness and appropriate exercises such as walking, squatting, and generally reducing the time spent sitting in a chair. A recent study has shown that exercise can also help to improve cognition levels in seniors to reduce thei...r risk of falling, because the brain network used for navigation and controlled walking is also used for attention and memory. This means that exercise can help prevent falling by strengthening your muscles, and improving your brain health! See the news article below for more information on falling in the senior population. Happy Spring Everyone! Now that the weather is getting warmer, its time to spring into action and get back into enjoying time spent outdoors. Running is a great way to improve your fitness, set goals, and enjoy the fresh air, but injury prevention is important when exercising, especially when you are starting a new training program. Meanwhile, the intervention that research consistently shows is most effective for low back pain is exer...cise!
