Abstract art literally means the distancing of an idea from objective referents. Portside Gallery artists are mostly visual artists ( paint what you see). But all of them play with abstract art. Take a look and tap the photo for more information. portsidegallery.ca

As long as I can remember, the colours, the movement and the moods of the world have fascinated me. In my early years, I spent many hours wandering through the fields and ravines around our home. The seasons with their colours and moods continue to inspire me. Artist Pat Curtis Take a trip to the market at portsidegallery.ca

A description of the harbour should appear early in the every mariner story. PS harbour contains a combination of period structures and the ongoing story of the Great Lakes fishing industry, I never tire of the subject and use it often in photographic experimentation & expression. In my garden the first flowers to bloom are Peonies. They always inspire me to paint a still life every year. This year using a mason jar and an old tablecloth brought the colour pink to life. Peonies in a Mason Jar, was painted in oil and is 20"x16" By Kit Merriam Cutting. See it in the Spring Online Show at https://portsidegallery.ca

Artist Patti Fisher talks about her painting in Portside Gallery Online Spring Show. "I've had this thing, a love for, and have been intrigued by owls since I was young, only to find out much later that my mothers maiden name translates to owl. The batik technique I use of layering hot wax to protect the lightest colours until the painting is finished adds a unique & textured look only batiking can achieve. ... I chose this image of the Great Horned Owl because his look and attitude expressed my sentiments regarding the dragging on of winter and the desire for brighter and warmer spring days!" "The lakes, rivers, and forests of Northern Ontario have always had a special attraction for me. Spending time there has motivated me to paint the almost endless scenes that the area presents. 'Below the Rapids" is one such depiction of a river in Northern Ontario where the immediate sound of moving water is contrasted with the roaring water of the unseen rapids just a short distance upstream." Tulips,a symbol of spring was painted in February by Pat Curtis. "We were all looking forward to spring when everything open up, nature bursts forth and we all begin our summer activities. But alas it was not to be. Spring burst forth but we were confined to our homes due to the virus. I found that the tulips became a symbol of hope. We will eventually be back to our normal lives." We are having a Spring Show on the website. Susan Shurish's art is titled "And On, and On", acrylic, 12x12. Her idea for this painting is that each ending has a new beginning within it. Sue liked the contrasts of organic and man-made shapes, and of metal and earth tones. https://portsidegallery.ca

That painting was started at Portside Gallery just before we closed down because of Covid19. S'ine had brought all the items to create the still life. We sketched and painted all morning. A time that everyone can appreciate is very precious to me now. Fortunately, I had taken several photos of the subject and was able to finish it. I painted the whole surface burnt umber in oil paint, and then wiped away areas to set up the composition as well as light and dark areas. It wa...s fun to paint and very satisfying in more ways than one! Green Apples - oil 12" x16" by Diane Dobson See at the Spring Online Show https://portsidegallery.ca See more
