2020 is The Year of the nurse and this week marks Nursing week. We would like to acknowledge and thank all of the nurses RN’s, RPN’s, NP’s for their incredible work and dedication during the difficult times of Covid-19. Please take the time to thank a nurse. What happens when society is told to STAY HOME when you do not have a home.... These past two weeks+ have been like no other and we recognized that none of us c...ould have prepared for something like this even those of us who regularly operate in emergency situations. Thankfully we are innate problem solvers so our staff and leadership team were able to jump into quick action. Imperfect action trumps perfect planning during these times. Now that being said, COVID-19 is a beast that we have never seen before and times are very unpredictable so plans that may work one day, may not work the next day. We currently have 50+ people experiencing homelessness safe in our temporary shelter at the hotel where we are practicing social distancing and isolation efforts. In collaboration, Elizabeth Fry, who are on the next level of the hotel, are facilitating the intakes for most of the women needing shelter in our community and Busby is facilitating mostly males. Our staff are working together and supporting eachother through the daily increasded demand. Working together through meal times, serving just shy of 80 people and growing. Our outreach team, as well as Gilbert Centre outreach team, are out seeing those who are still living rough and ensuring they have safe food, supplies and tents. We are currently experiencing increased pressures of people who have been exited from correctional institutions, hospitals and other institutions and we are trying our best to meet these increased demands. Currently, we have NO confirmed cases of COVID-19 among clients or staff. Given our shelter environment, we know that prevention is our most effective tool at managing the COVID-19 pandemic. We know and appreciate how passionate and dedicated our volunteers are about serving those most vulnerable in our community. More than ever, we and all homeless-serving agencies will need the community’s support to protect our city’s most vulnerable people during this pandemic. As a precaution, effective Friday April 3, we are cancelling all volunteer shifts and suspend future volunteer opportunities. This will include all meal preparation teams and sandwich teams at this time. The only exception for volunteering is for our van volunteers and anyone from the medical community who is interested in volunteering at this time. We thank you so much for your kindness and understanding during this time. With that being said, if you would like to continue to support with purchasing sandwich making supplies or purchasing grocery store gift cards, we would appreciate it immensely.
