The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the challenges faced by people living with HIV, women and girls and key populations, including in accessing life-saving health care, and how the crisis has widened the social and economic inequalities that increase the vulnerability of marginalized groups to HIV.

It is now widely recognized that Aboriginal and Indigenous peoples share particular vulnerabilities to acquiring HIV and AIDS. These vulnerabilities include poverty, marginalization, lack of political and social power, fragmentation of family and community relationships, geographical isolation, low literacy rates, poor general health, limited access to health care, drug use/injection, and low community and individual self esteem (UNAIDS, 2006 in Health Canada, 2009).

As World AIDS Day comes to a close, please join us in remembering those who have passed from HIV/AIDS. May we know that while some journeys have come to an end, others continue, guided by the light and love of those that came before. Together, we are stronger, more knowledgeable and more powerful. Our lives have been forever changed by the stories and communities we are connected to, and it has been a privilege to share in the journeys of life with HIV/AIDS. Snachalya (You have honoured us greatly).

World AIDS Day represents a time for us to reflect on the progress we have made in the HIV epidemic through research, education and love. It is a day for us to remember those who have passed while celebrating those who continue to share their journeys with us. The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is 'Resilience and Impact'. 2020 has been a difficult year for us all, but we must remember that together, we are strong. We must renew our efforts to come together and work towards the 2030 HIV/AIDS goals. In previous years we have taken this day to remember those we have lost through a community candlelight vigil. Unfortunately, this year we are unable to do this in-person, but we will be posting a virtual ceremony later in the day. https://www.powtoon.com/c/d6ee8zue6cp/1/m

Whether we are speaking about HIV/AIDS, COVID-19 or other communicable diseases, it is important to remember that the language we choose to use can impact the perception and stigma associated with the condition. "Stigma represents a common and substantial obstacle to the control of infectious disease outbreaks. If people feel stigmatized, whether externally or internally, their compliance with public health measures may be significantly reduced compared with non-stigmatized groups, which could impede outbreak control efforts." - Addressing Disease-Related Stigma During Infectious Disease Outbreaks

Today, September 18th is HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. It is important for us to recognize and celebrate that those living with HIV are living longer, healthier lives thanks to the increased knowledge and treatment of HIV. With the aging population of those living with HIV/AIDS, it is important to also acknowledge that new age-mediated challenges can arise. We must work together to help support those aging with HIV/AIDS, and encourage younger generations to get tested, reach-out for treatment options and continue to lead healthier lives.

Positive Living North: No khyoh t'sih'en t'sehena Society 02.08.2020

This upcoming Friday, September 18th, is HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day! There has been a consistent aging trend across the population living with HIV due to increased discoveries of antiretroviral medications and effective treatments. We can continue to support healthier, longer living for those living with HIV/AIDS by promoting education of HIV transmission and pathogenesis, as well as supporting adherence to treatment regiments. On September 18th, let's celebrate the advances made that have allowed longer, healthier lives for those living with HIV/AIDS, while also raising awareness that there is still more work to be done to support this aging population!
