Powder Staff Spotlight - MARC DESCHENES Marc is simply a legend at Powder Creek Lodge. P.S.S. We Love You Marc! More About Marc...... "I've been guiding for 30 years, started my career in heli-skiing in the Revelstoke, Golden and Nakusp areas, was also mixing in some cat skiing and ski touring work , again all over the place. Started working at PCL from the very beginning...and I'm still there. Experienced many wonderful adventures and worked with a variety of really amazing people...life is good. Also several years of teaching CAA courses and recreational safety courses as well as avalanche safety consulting for industry (mainly forestry). I work the rest of the year as a geotechnical specialist mainly conducting terrain stability assessments and some avalanche hazard assessments (forestry, highways , mining). Raising two beautiful young kids now 13 and 15, they keep me busy." What is the best thing about working at Powder Creek Lodge? "There are too many good things to list about working at PCL but I can name a few. For starters , the people including John, Shelley, the staff and some really amazing guests who are there to share the same passion we have about experiencing winter in such an incredible mountainous setting and dance through the powder! It's always been and will continue to be a great working environment with solid, hard working and fun people. Can't say enough about savouring the delicious high end food, the wonderful comfort of the lodge , sharing stories and enjoying the laughter. Nothing like starting your day with a fresh coat of deep powder, feeling the excitement, planning a day and then setting out and breaking trail where no other tracks can be seen...a very special feeling indeed (even after all these years!). And of course, the pleasure of ripping the skins and accepting the gift the snow gods have to offer." What is your favourite run at Powder Creek Lodge? "My favourite run...hmmm, so many...lost in wonder. Gotta say it's a pretty special feeling when you're sewing a line from the top of Mistletoe then finishing off through Hour glass...with 30cm of fresh pow (and Low hazard)." What is your most memorable day at Powder Creek Lodge? "Most memorable day...there's been a few, but it was a special memory when I first went into the Little Joe lakes to explore and got right into the Baldr basin up to the col...so much to see , so much to do...very cool place, and the guests were blown away ! There was also my first year at PCL, 1998 I think? First shift ...looking around thinking , wow, I get to go walk around here and ski!"

Powder Staff Spotlight - DAYNA THOMPSON Dayna is new to the Powder Creek Lodge team this season. We can't wait to have her host her first week at the lodge and to get some photos of her shredding pow! P.S.S. We Love You Dayna! More About Dayna:... "This will be my first season as a hut custodian with Powder Creek Lodge, and I'm very much looking forward to what the winter will bring. I am drawn to the simplicity of lodge life, and the calmness that comes as a result of disconnection. One thing about this life that really stands out to me is just how satisfied everyone is after a full day of working hard and playing around in the snow. Who can't be happy when there's endless powder and delicious food to return to? In my other life I work as a mental health nurse out of Nelson. This work is rewarding but it's also nice to be around folks who are just super stoked on the joys of life in the mountains!"

Powder Staff Spotlight - EMILY GRADY Emily is one of the best skiers we have ever had at the lodge and every year she teaches us something new. P.S.S. We Love You Emily! More About Emily:... "I've lived, worked, and played in the mountains near Nelson and Revelstoke for over 20 years and combine my background as an alpine and telemark ski instructor with my current work as a professional avalanche instructor and apprentice ski guide. My ski career has taken me all over the world from South America to New Zealand, Canada, and the US and I'm now based in Revelstoke where I've worked for the Canadian Avalanche Association for over a decade, overseeing the delivery of professional-level avalanche courses." What is the best thing about working at Powder Creek Lodge? "I've had the pleasure of working with John, Shelley, and the PCL crew since 2017, and as a single mother of two young kids, my guiding stints at Powder Creek are treasured as quality time in the mountains where I can share my passion for sliding on snow, being outdoors, and taking in the alpine air and beautiful scenery. Of all the ski touring lodges I've worked at, Powder Creek is one of the most comfortable, well-run lodges with fantastic terrain right out the door. Speaking of terrain, something that stands out is the breathtaking view from the lodge of the North Face, especially as the sun sets and the alpine glows. What makes that area even more appealing are the many north-facing runs that stay cool and dry throughout the winter, and I even enjoy the big haul back up to the lodge to finish the day!" What is your most memorable day at Powder Creek Lodge? "Although I have many memorable days at Powder Creek, one that stands out is my first venture up the Backdoor (aka world's best StairMaster) and into the Attic. It was like entering a secret garden full of ancient larches, powdery stashes, and amazing ski lines like Great Falls; heading into the Attic still feels that way." What is your favourite run at Powder Creek Lodge? "But, when it comes to a "favourite run" or zone, ultimately it's whichever has the best combination of snow, weather conditions, and people that I'm with, and I have to admit that costumes help too!"

Power Staff Spotlight - ROGER YIM Roger has been at Powder Creek Lodge longer than we have! Roger is one of our lead guides and has the ability to make you smile and laugh, no matter what. P.S.S. We Love You Roger! More About Roger:... "I think this is my 8th season at Powder Creek Lodge. When I'm not at Powder Creek, I work at other mechanized ski operations when I don’t feel like walking uphill. In the future, I hope to do some work instructing for the ACMG and CAA. Fun Fact... I have been known to work at music festivals, raving away with people, lasers and sound systems!" What is the best thing about working at Powder Creek Lodge? "The best thing about Powder Creek Lodge are the people that work there, the guests AND it snows a lot. Also Shannon’s and all the chefs cooking and baking is the best thing in the world. There have been countless days of good snow, many laughs on the up tracks and the feeling of being far away from everything. Ski touring gives me the excuse to eat too many baked goods." What is your favourite run at Powder Creek Lodge? "My favourite run is White Rabbit after coming down from Mistletoe. Others include First Wish and Jenga (after doing the ridge traverse) and Shreddies because when the snow is good you feel like you are a pro skier:)" What is your most memorable day at Powder Creek Lodge? "I have had too many favourite days at Powder Creek but any day we get to go skiing and there is powder. A close second is whenever someone has a breakthrough day in their skills or fitness. Because of the terrain and variety, it’s awesome to see people get better and more confident with their touring skills." Image of Roger with hero snow on Shreddies!

So much snow, you sometimes need a beacon to find your ski buddy when you exit the lodge.

Powder Staff Spotlight - JANA SCOTT This is Jana's 4th season with Powder Creek Lodge as lodge host and custodian extraordinaire. P.S.S. We Love You Jana! A Little Bit About Jana:... "I work as a physiotherapist at KBRH (no other jobs currently, phew) and inspired to bike race by John and Shelley. I was born and raised in Rossland - skiing since I was 2, snowboarding since I was 11, backcountry skiing for 12 years now (ski and splitboard). I've worked as tail guide at Big Red Cats for 3 years and a volunteer ski patroller for 5 years. I love being in the mountains and part of the Powder Creek team!!" What is the best thing about working at Powder Creek Lodge? "Getting to know the guests, shredding powder, Shannon's food and the most kind and generous bosses ever (and I have worked a lot of jobs, haha)." What is your favourite run at Powder Creek Lodge? "First Wish and Whoville Trees." What is your most memorable day at Powder Creek Lodge? "Sharing the lodge and powder with my dad last year during friend's week." When you book a ski week with us, you are supporting our local guides. These talented people work hard to keep you safe in the backcountry. So as the world begins to slowly open and you start to support local businesses, think about how booking a week with us supports ACMG guides.

This weekend we hosted 12 people at the lodge for our annual work weekend. We had a chance to practise our COVID-19 protocols and things went really well! We are excited that we can stay open and ensure safe practises this season, while enjoying LOTS of powder.
