January can be a really tough time for people financially. If you or someone you know could use some support here are some great resources.
On this day, January 26, in 1700, a 9.0M earthquake struck off the west coast of what is now called Vancouver Island, causing an immediate and catastrophic tsun...ami. The entire village of Loht'a was destroyed. The oral history of this events like this one have been passed down through generations, educating people about devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, with incredible accuracy of dates, times and locations. By keeping and passing down these oral traditions, people have been able to prepare for future earthquakes and tsunamis. Read one seismic oral history, graciously shared by Huu-ay-aht elders, in our Earthquake and Tsunami guide (PDF, 1.5MB): http://ow.ly/JS4z30ran7J

The BC Wildfire Service is pleased to support the Penticton Trails Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR) project underway near Powell River. This treatment will reduce ...wildfire risk in this popular hiking area. There will be periodic closures of some trails while danger trees are cut to make the trails safer for the public and firefighters. Hikers using the trails are asked to obey posted signs during this process. For more information about this project, including a map, visit the WRR webpage: https://www2.gov.bc.ca//funding-for-wildfire-prev/crip/wrr
This project continues and burning of debris has commenced. The project is on crown land outside the city limits.
