Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cat...s to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death. Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Keep Informed .... Live Healthy Are you glad you can stand or sit upright? Thank your spine, a stack of little bones called vertebrae along the center of your back, from your seat to your neck. It supports your head, shoulders, and upper body. Your spine plays another key role: The vertebrae make a tunnel for your spinal cord. That's the set of nerves that connect your brain to most of your body. A cushion called a disk sits between each of your vertebrae, so they don't scra...Continue reading

Anxiety and Panic Panic attacks are intense periods of fear or feelings of doom developing over a very short time frame -- up to 10 minutes -- and associated with at least four of the following: Sudden overwhelming fear Palpitations... Sweating Trembling Shortness of breath Sense of choking Chest pain Nausea Dizziness A feeling of being detached from the world (de-realization) Fear of dying Numbness or tingling in the limbs or entire body Chills or hot flushes Panic attacks and panic disorder are not the same thing. Panic disorder involves recurrent panic attacks along with constant fears about having future attacks and, often, avoiding situations that may trigger or remind someone of previous attacks. Not all panic attacks are caused by panic disorder; other conditions may trigger a panic attack. They might include: Mitral valve prolapse Hypoglycemia Hyperthyroidism Heart attacks Social phobia Agoraphobia (fear of not being able to escape, such as flying in an airplane or being in crowds) Generalized anxiety disorder is excessive and unrealistic worry over a period of at least six months. It is associated with at least three of the following symptoms: Restlessness Fatigue Difficulty concentrating Irritability or explosive anger Muscle tension Sleep disturbances Personality changes, such as becoming less social Phobic disorders are intense, persistent, and recurrent fear of certain objects (such as snakes, spiders, blood) or situations (such as heights, speaking in front of a group, public places). These exposures may trigger a panic attack. Social phobia and agoraphobia are examples of phobic disorders. Post-traumatic stress disorder -- or PTSD -- was considered to be a type of anxiety disorder in earlier versions of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. But in 2013, PTSD was reclassified as its own condition. It describes a range of emotional reactions caused by exposure to either death or near-death circumstances (such as fires, floods, earthquakes, shootings, assault, automobile accidents, or wars) or to events that threaten one's own or another person's physical well-being. The traumatic event is re-experienced with fear of feelings of helplessness or horror and may appear in thoughts and dreams. Common behaviors include the following: Avoiding activities, places, or people associated with the triggering event Difficulty concentrating Difficulty sleeping Being hypervigilant (you closely watch your surroundings) Feeling a general sense of doom and gloom with diminished emotions (such as loving feelings or aspirations for the future) Symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, and weakness should not be automatically attributed to anxiety and require evaluation by a doctor.

Walk-in clinic opens in Powell River on July 29 Sara Donnelly / Powell River Peak JULY 25, 2019 04:43 PM Powell River Medical Clinic... WALK IN: A family care and walk-in clinic is slated to open on Monday, July 29, at 4280 Joyce Avenue. Sara Donnelly photo Those without a physician in town, or in need of seeing one urgently, will have a new option starting Monday, July 29, when Powell River Medical Clinic opens its doors. Its going to be the first clinic in Powell River that combines family medicine and a walk-in clinic, which is so needed here in the community, said Dr. Alexander Marchenko. He is opening the clinic with Dr. Diana Gil. Both doctors worked at Marine Medical Clinic and will be taking their existing practices with them, but may have room to accept a few new patients on a full-time basis, he added. We might have some spots left. We usually keep those for patients who urgently need family doctors, said Marchenko. For those who already have a family physician but cant see them, they can always see us on a walk-in basis. There will be a third doctor joining the clinic in the new year, he added, and there is capacity for up to four physicians in the space. Marchenko recently moved to the community and immediately saw a need for such a service. [I was] a bit surprised when we moved to Powell River eight months ago to see there is no walk-in clinic, he said, so many patients unfortunately need to wait long hours to get a prescription. The clinic will also offer online booking and provide hourly updates on clinic wait times. We are trying to make a patient-friendly office in terms of convenience, said Marchenko. And its the only clinic thats brand new in terms of equipment. We made it from scratch; there was never a clinic at this location before. For more information, go to powellriverclinic.ca.

Keep informed.... live healthy: Is Sunscreen Dangerous? A Dermatologist Weighs In Its becoming more and more difficult to figure out what to believe about anything even something as basic as sunscreen. This is partly because companies, and some individuals, have figured out how to use the power of suggestion and incomplete (or false) information, to direct our thought patterns in favor of, or against, certain products.... Some news stories that popped up this summer might lead you to believe that theres a troubling new safety concern with sunscreen. The stories were centered around a single study published in a lesser-known journal (Chemosphere). Journalists took partial truths from the study and amplified them into more partial truths. The echo effect! And voila unfounded hysteria! What the study really said was that one ingredient (avobenzone) in some sunscreens could, when exposed to chlorine and light in a swimming pool, convert into a small amount of toxic chemical (which would then be diluted in a very large swimming pool). Note that this was not tested in an actual swimming pool. It was tested in a lab under conditions NOT at all like the real world. So, how should you respond? If you are swimming in a chlorinated pool, avoid the ingredient avobenzone for now, until we have better science. Dont drink quarts of pool water. Swallowing a little bit will not be an issue. Dont spend a lot of time licking your skin in a chlorinated pool. Not something most of us do anyway. What you shouldnt do is abandon sunscreens altogether. Why? They help protect you from the deadliest form of skin cancer melanoma They help protect from the other types of skin cancer, basal cell, and squamous cell carcinomas They keep your skin youthful, unwrinkled, and help prevent sagging They prevent brown spots and blotchiness They prevent precancerous spots (actinic keratosis) All of the above is according to verified science, from a multitude of research. The bottom line is, safety is an issue for all of us. Is it safe to cross the street or drive your car? Not completely. But we accept these risks. Is it safe to eat food? Yes, but not all food (sugar, soft drinks, pesticide-treated veggies, fried foods probably not so much). The degree of risk we take all depends on the way we think about risks in our environment for ourselves, and our families.

Detox diets can be addicting? Going without food or having an enema can give some people a feeling of being high, in much the same way cigarettes or alcohol can. Because of this, some people do them often to get that feeling again. Detox diets are meant to be short-term. Fasting and cleansing too often can reset your metabolism so it works more slowly. This makes it harder to keep off weight youve lost, and you can have trouble losing weight later, too.... Toxins are poisons that usually come from a live source like a plant or animal. They're harmful in your body, whether you eat, drink, or breathe them, or get them through your skin. For example, when you drink too much alcohol, it can damage your organs. And toxins in tobacco are linked to many diseases. The methods may have changed, but getting rid of your bodys toxins isnt a new idea. Many religions use fasting as a purification practice, and have for thousands of years. And long before the 20th century, doctors regularly used leeches, enemas, and fasting to treat people. You may lose weight from a detox, but not fat. Detoxing rids your body of water weight and muscle mass. The number on your scale is very likely to go back up once you go off the diet. The most common way to do it involves fasting days -- either a couple of days each week or one week out of the month. During fasting days, you eat only about 500 calories, then you go back to normal, healthy eating on other days. It may help you lose weight, lower your cholesterol levels, and ease inflammation. But talk with your doctor for guidance and to see if its OK for you. When you do a colon cleanse, you: Put water through your colon with a tube Also called a colonic irrigation, it flushes out your colon with gallons of water. A small tube goes into your rectum and streams the water through. Doctors sometimes use it to prep you for things like a colonoscopy. Although doctors do sometimes use it to help with digestive problems, theres no proof it helps your body rid itself of toxins any better than it already does naturally. If you have digestive issues, gentler ways to help them may include laxatives, probiotics, and exercise. Juice cleanse: Only drink juice from fruit or veggies This is an all-liquid diet. Usually, you do it for anywhere from 3 to 10 days. But theres no research that shows its any better for you than simply eating fruits and vegetables. Staying away from booze for a month -- Dry January, for example -- isnt a way to detox any part of your body. But research shows it may change your attitude toward alcohol so you make healthier choices going forward.
