It's thanksgiving, so here's something you're going to love to hear regarding cheating, and losing weight. First off, calories in calories is true. But while it's "easy" to know how many calories are going in, you'll never know how many are going out. Sure you can exercise and use a device that estimates, but how do you know how you're metabolizing the foods you are eating? The good news:... Unfortunately, a cheat meal will most likely cause more harm than good. You will not trigger hormone response long enough to offset the extra calories taken in. Instead of cheat meal: Have a cheat weekend. Yes, that's right, a whole weekend. Why!? Because if (and that's a big if) you are responsibly trying to lose weight you are most likely in a calorie deficit. When you are in a deficit for some time your body learns how to maintain with lower calories (your metabolism slows down) so guess what, you'll have to eat even less to continue weight loss. I've been there. It sucks. No energy for workouts, scale not budging, hungry all the time. How you do it: Calorie deficit for 2 weeks, then enjoy the weekend with your favorite foods. Am I telling you to eat pizza and blueberry pie? Honestly, I have. But timing is the key. Going into Thanksgiving, enjoy the dinner and dessert. Over eat on the turkey if possible. Make an estimation of how many calories you've consumed and then next week get back to your deficit. Perhaps a 24 hour or 36 hour fast (which also triggers a positive hormonal response) will get you back on track. My personal protocol: 2 weeks of calorie deficit The only thing on my mind is what I want to cheat with when the time is right. Try to cheat with healthy meals. Garbage food is garbage food regardless of if it's a cheat or not. Friday evening to Sunday afternoon every other week indulge. Monday fast. Summary: Being in a calorie deficit for prolonged periods of time will slow down your metabolism. And it takes a long time to fix that damage. If you're intermittent fasting, or just staying in a calorie deficit, make sure you have scheduled, timed, refeeds. You'll be happy you get your fav foods and you'll lose more weight long term because of it.
