Recommending the Furuno 711c series autohelm-- I have one on order myself which will be a major upgrade over the old Wagner. With lithium batteries and a fuel cell on board, suddenly the turnkey convenience of a hydraulic autopilot becomes achievable.

Updates on LiFePo batteries: many, many advantages-- while the increased capacity is obvious, increased utility of the solar array is great--one if the less obv...ious but significant advantages is the higher resting voltage. Most yacht systems while labeled 12v are really designed for an operation voltage of 13.5 or so volts, so for usage while the engine is running. Furnaces, fridges, inverters can experience hard starts and brown outs when the engine is off, as load voltages for conventional batteries will be nearer 12.1...performance for everything is notably more anemic and equipment suffers for it. The liFepo batteries are a significant improvement in this regard. See more

Well, with work as slowing down due to the bug perhaps it is time to write a sequel to "Seasteading"...

For dyi cruisers especially on small boats concerned with fresh water systems: the cheapest solution I know of is inflatable kiddy pools and a submersible bilge pump: it can be near like having a well when it rains. Just in case you need a quick solution...a prefilter is also nice...

Rumor may have it that my last boat, Shearwater, an Ericson 34x, may be coming up for sale. Great opportunity for a fine sailing boat! 28k ish? Worth it, and turnkey with a live aboard slip.
