This post about "murder hornets" has been going around and I wanted to share it along with the email my Master Gardener's group received from fellow MG, Master ...Beekeeper, and popular beekeeping educator, Brian Campbell. "Hello Master Gardener community; I must set the record straight on this hornet. It is sad that this article contains a lot of inaccuracies and is basically trying to stoke fear and hatred of insects. No one until now has named it the "murder" hornet. Yes, there are several dozen deaths in Japan that are attributable to hornet stings but rarely to this one species. There are more than a dozen Vespa species in Japan that are far more deadly because of where they nest and the numbers of individuals in their colonies. The Asian Giant Hornet nests in the mountains at a higher altitude in areas not heavily populated, people rarely come into contact with individuals of Vespa mandarinia. Their colonies are composed of 30 to 40 individuals, small and are located underground. They have a low reproductive rate and have not been invasive in other areas unlike several of the other hornet species native to East Asia, such as the recent introduction of Vespa veluntina into Europe and the UK. The public does not need to fear this hornet or be concerned that they will be 'murdered' by it. There is a tradition of people digging up the nests of Vespa mandarinia to bring home and raise for food. Traditionally without the use of any protective gear. Insect larvae are about a third larger than their adult forms. Imagine how big and juicy the Vespa mandarinia larva would be just before pupation! Hornets did evolve to eat honey bees. There is even an orchid in China that replicates the alarm pheromone of an injured honey bee to attract hornets for pollination. Yet somehow the beekeeping industry in Asia in the distribution range of these hornets is flourishing. Flourishing because they have learned how to keep bees and discourage hornet attacks. We can too. Yes, if it establishes there will be a learning curve but beekeepers have had to face obstacles before and will continue to do so. Worse critters could have been introduced and one day will be. I'm thinking of other species of mites far more destructive than Varroa. Wasps are already universally hated. It wasn't that long ago that bees were also. Let's not give people who want to kill things a reason for doing so. It's better to urge calm, to give good information that adds nuance and not panic to community concerns. My two cents worth! We will not be opening our doors this season for bedding out plant sales. We are thankful we made the decision before the world turned upside down. We are utilizing our greenhouse space for custom planters and growing fresh vegetables. Keep an eye out for posts of fresh veggies available. We are going to miss seeing all your faces this spring stay safe and healthy. Please support our other local greenhouses as they are going to need all the help they can get. I know La Greenhouse and Water Valley Forest Nursery are adapting to our new normal for online ordering. Thanks for everyone’s support and hope we can supply you with some delicious veggies this year.

our greenhouse business is currently undergoing some changes. Due to the tough economy, working full time and balancing family we have decided to scale back. This has been a tough decision but spring has us feeling overwhelmed and unable to supply the quality of product we would like. Currently we are planning on ordering a minimal amount of product and be open for a couple of weeks in May. We will keep you up to date as we figure it out. We are exploring different id...eas for the 2021 season that may be a better fit for us. If you would like to request particular plants and the quantity is large enough we will try to accommodate your custom orders. We will need to know as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience we truly appreciate your business. Our custom tree planting and moving operation will be operating in full force this season.
