Here is our 3 year old daughter watching her Dad butcher an animal, that she knew well, out in the sunshiny pasture that her and her brother run and play in. She isn't scared, or nervous, or "grossed out". She is full of interesting questions, she is surprsingly reverent and she refuses to come back inside until Dad is done. If this surprises you and you think I'm either stretching the truth or that she must be some kind of exceptionally tuned in child, neither are true. She... is just a blank little slate looking to her grown ups and the environment around her to guide her reaction. As soon as we walked up, Blake stopped what he was doing, jumped down from the rig and invited the kids to say a prayer with him for the life that was lost. He started in and Rosie immediately cut him off, wanting to take the lead. Little people are so amazing if we slow down and listen. The act of slaughter is relatively new to me within the last 10 years. Growing up in town and being almost entirely removed from the intimacies of food production as a child and young adult, it can be a lot to take in. I consciously check myself and hold a silent space for the kids to respond naturally and to support them in whatever they are experiencing because THIS, right here, is the life we have chosen and we can't and don't want to hide it from our children. Now Rosie says she wants to be a butcher like Dad when she grows up. I told her that sounds great and that Dad can teach her. She was quick to inform me she already knows how and on some level, I believe her. While she is still too young to hold a knife let alone take an animals life, I trust that the really hard part... the emotional and even spiritual strength required to have blood on your hands, she might just have dialled in. That is more than I can say about myself. A big thank you to generations of skilled butchers and farmers for doing this work, so that I don't have to. - Ang
