For those of us who avoid picking up the phone and prefer to text, the research is in. Essentially, the greatest feelings of and benefits from connection at least in these days of physical distancing occur when we connect by talking. Video doesn’t seem to add appreciably to that benefit, but texts and emails are notably less effective. So whenever you can, call rather than typing. Stay connected, and reconnect safely! We’re down to the wire for Christmas celebrations, now! When we talk with one another about plans, safety and rules have become integral, but can be contentious. This year, more than any other, lead with safety and kindness. Knowing how difficult it can be to change others’ behaviour, if someone asks you to a gathering that feels unsafe to you, when you decline, you can still thank them, acknowledge your discomfort and your wish that you could be together, as well as your ho...pe that next year will look different. Another difference is the immense financial strain more community members are facing. Perhaps this is the year to give if you can. Giving can also look like picking up groceries, sending someone a silly joke a few times a week, or even singing someone a song over Zoom. When people can’t keep their distance, it’s easier to focus on your options, you may be able to move further away. If you can’t, simply gently ask for some space. Similarly, if you can, have a couple of spare masks in bags you can offer people. Sometimes, people have genuinely forgotten. But remember, use discretion, if someone seems agitated, or you feel unsafe, leave it to someone with the authority to handle the situation. Be kind and carry on! Happy holidays!

Sometimes it really is the little things, grateful for a stunning sunrise, and the mild temperatures.

I thought I'd share this because it really captures the pendulation that we are experiencing these days. Sometimes we're just fine in our little bubbles, and then, just not. It's normal, and if you want to talk about it, counselling can help!

Have you ever finished a meal or a drive, and realised you have not noticed anything about them? This is a pretty common experience, and it’s a sign that you are not in the present moment. Spending all your time in your thinking mind - or on screens - can leave you feeling unfulfilled, dissatisfied and disconnected. Worrying about things you cannot change or influence steals joy. ...the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment ...in whatever form. Both are illusions. Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now The key? The present moment. Mindfulness can help you connect with the present, like children do. Your mind can either think or pay attention to what is around you, not both. Notice what is around you, both what is happening and what your senses tell you. Appreciate the feeling of the sun on your face or the view from your window. If you are speaking with someone, really listen, rather than formulating a response. It sounds simple, and with practice, it becomes easy. You will appreciate the difference.
