I’ve got two new employees working in the basement! I’m always putting all the profits back into the business, so, after a successful couple of shows in the Seedy Saturday/Sunday circuit, it was time to check out the Urban Worm Bag from @urbanwormco. This is a Continuous Flow Through (CFT) type of vermicomposter: food waste goes in the top, finished vermicast comes out the bottom. I’ve made my own CFTs as well (scroll through my previous posts) that have worked quite well. A...nyways, the UWB is a good option for folks who want a simple way to separate their castings for garden use. Its large surface area (remember: surface area is more important than volume when vermicomposting!) makes it capable of handling a larger family’s waste as well. I’m always experimenting, so I’m setting these two beauties up to run side by side feedstock experiments to help refine my larger-scale feedstock recipes. I’ve had enough worm farming friends recommend the UWB, that I was very confident taking the plunge in getting two right off the hop. Even if you’re not ready to invest in a UWB, go check out their website: owner/operator Steve Churchill is one of the most knowledgeable voices out there in home and mid-scale vermicomposting. There’s a ton of great blogs and videos on there for general vermicomposting, regardless of whether you use the UWB. Thanks, Steve! #vermiculture #wormfarming @ Regina, Saskatchewan See more

#closingtheloop with @dandysartisanicecream ! We’re happy to be partnering with another great local business to reduce environmental impact in the city of Regina. Dandy’s re-uses their ice cream pails as long as they can, and now those pails are finding a new use with us as packaging for our vermicast! The blessing and curse of plastic is that it lasts forever. So, when it’s already in our systems, we better use the hell out of it. Reuse > recycle. If you’re a small (or larg...e!) business producing a consistent type of waste, check around your community for re-users before chucking it in the dumpster. There are plenty of innovative artists and small businesses who might have a use for that waste. One business’ waste is another business’ treasure! Thanks to Daniella and the team at Dandy’s! #yqrsmallbusinesses #reuse See more

Be prepared! Teaching the Beaver Scouts about worms and vermicomposting tonight! Education is the most important part of what I do and I’m always thrilled to have students who love digging in worm poop as much as I do! Thanks Scouts! #yqr #educationispower
