What is an effortless yoga practice? Does it mean limiting your practice to restorative postures? Worry not! Whether your thighs are burning 10 breaths into utkatasana (chair pose) or you're laying in shavasana, your practice can be arduous or perfectly easy. An effortful practice is one in which you are trying to follow an agenda: "I must hold this posture for 10 breaths!"... "My goal is to touch my toes!" "I am supposed to be relaxed!" All of these common internal narratives are really saying the same thing: "I want to control my experience." But what does it look like to approach a yoga practice with genuine innocence? Allowing curiosity, play, and openness to guide your movement? In this space of permission, your body, breath, mind, and emotions, are free to bloom with ease as they did naturally when you were a small child. When a yoga practice is approached through the lense of intentional ideas, all asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork), or meditations will be confined to the purpose you have externally assigned to them. If you have no expectations, there are no mental limitations imposed upon your experience. You are free to discover, to effortlessly unfold into newness throughout your practice. It is from this space of possibility that the transformative technology of yoga is able to do its magic. Have you ever experienced discernment between an effortful and effortless moment in your practice? What did you notice? Curious to observe, practice and learn more about yoga? Check out our 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher training programs here: https://www.pranayogastudio.ca/training/

Asteya(Sanskrit: ; IAST:asteya) is the Sanskrit term for "non-stealing".Asteyais considered as one of five major vows of Hinduism and Jainism. It is also considered one of ten forms of temperance (virtuous self-restraint) in Indian philosophy. The basic idea of asteya is that a person should neither steal, nor have the intention or desire to steal, anything belonging to another person. This applies to speech and thoughts as well as actions. Another way of thinking a...bout asteya is to avoid taking anything that is not freely given. When incorporated into everyday life and into daily yoga practice, asteya can be deeply enriching. The practice of asteya asks us to look at where we hoard or have greed and reminds us of the nonmaterial richness of our lives. It engages us with the perfectly imperfect reality of the moment. Practicing asteya on the mat will help you explore the small ways you withhold care and respect from yourself. The result is a deeper and more honest relationship with life that no one can take away from you. Want to learn more about yoga philosophy and the practice of Asteya? The word ‘sat’ literally translates as ‘true essence’ or ‘true nature’. Sanskrit is a vibrational language and so each word is so much more than a label. Satya includes right speech and truthful communication, as well as skillful listening. Practicing asana with Satya in mind can be very similar to applying the first Yama ahimsa to our physical practice. How many times have you ignored or pushed past an injury or limitation just to get into that yoga posture? Yin yoga is a practice of depth, intensity, nourishment and intuition. While exploring the bodys connective tissues, energetic pathways, and organ functions, a profound meditative portal opens, providing space and new ways of being in the physical experience. - Amanda Madhu What is yin? Yin is a gentle, slow-moving practice that creates strength and flexibility by lengthening the connective tissues of the body. Connective tissue, also called fascia, is found everywhere in ...the body and is one of the most difficult tissues to stretch due to its plastic nature. Yesterday we celebrated the Fall equinox in the northern hemisphere, meaning that the sun shined over the equator giving us an equal balance between darkness and light. Mythbusting Mondays- Because life is too short for excuses! The Myth: I already work out, I dont have time for yoga too. The Reality: While there are many fantastic ways to exercise and workout, there is nothing like yoga to balance strength with flexibility, to support joints, cleanse internal organs, regulate hormones, calm the mind, reduce stress, and create a more supple, healthy spine.... Yoga is an important accompaniment to other forms of exercise, because, as you now see, yoga balances the whole body. This means practicing yoga will not only help prevent injury but also help you reap more benefits from your workouts. Namaste, Your Prana Family

Have you noticed a change in the air? #fall season is approaching & we are happy to share with you some tips on how to make it more enjoyable. Get grounded: As the seasons shift, it is an excellent time to begin to cultivate some stillness in your daily life. Just like Mother Nature is preparing for a long winters rest, begin to draw your energy inward. Start to focus in on your home life. Stay in more. Make your home cozy and warm. Focus on a warming, nourishing foods.... Adequate protein intake and high-quality oils are essential. Its good to minimize all dry, rough, cold food. Warm, wet, deeply nourishing foods like soups, stews, and properly prepared porridges invite in the qualities we are looking for. Create rhythm your life. Sticking to regular meal and bed times can go a long way in creating balance and in helping you feel grounded. Our bodies do best when in rhythm with nature. Give your skin some love. Its great to use warming sesame oil in cooler weather. Start with the soles of the feet and work up the body to the head in sweeping strokes along muscles towards the heart, and circular movements around joints. Leave the oil on for 10 minutes then shower/ bathe- or keep it on if it feels good! Clean out the old. A little cleansing and purification is recommended during the change of the seasons. Happy Mythbusting Monday! Because life is too short for excuses. The Myth: I wont lose weight doing yoga... The Reality: Because yoga is designed to deep-clean and detoxify the body from the inside out, all the organs function better and food cravings are curbed, blood-sugar swings are reduced, and hormonal balance is optimized. ... Deep breathing makes deep changes, and people are known to drop weight (and the old habits that make it stick) that no other exercise ever could. Most importantly, however, is that yoga establishes a healthy, connected relationship with the body- as is. This is the ground for lasting transformation. Namaste, Your Prana Family

The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. Herbal medicine is an ancient healing art with profound effects on the human body. Plants contain unique constituents that can both boost and balance your immune system. They can either stimulate the immune system by directly fighting against viruses, bacteria and fungi or they can modulate and nourish the immune system to enhance the bodys own natural defenses. Peppermint l...eaf (Mentha piperita) Peppermint leaf contains vitamin C, calcium, B vitamins and potassium to help give your immune system an extra boost. Peppermint is traditionally used as a remedy for fever and chills, which may be partially explained by its paradoxical cool taste and its stimulating and warming after-effects within the body. It also fights against microbes and helps sooth the digestive system, making this tea ideal for the flu. Thyme leaf (Thymus vulgaris) Although thyme is native to the Mediterranean, it grows very well here and has become a common addition to any local herb garden. Thyme leaf tea is an excellent cough remedy. It helps the lungs expel excess mucus and helps to sooth inflamed lung tissue. Thyme has a powerful detoxifying and penetrative effect due to its volatile oils, which helps to open pores and thin mucus. It is also considered an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory for the lungs, and has shown to be an effective traditional remedy against powerful infective organisms like typhoid and diphtheria. Today, thyme is used for postnasal drip, whooping cough in children, sore throats, common colds and bronchitis. Sage leaf (Salvia officinalis) Sage is also native to the Mediterranean region and grows well in BC herb gardens. Sage leaf tea is the ultimate sore throat remedy. It has a specific action towards soothing inflammation of the throat, and helps to break up mucus formation. It also contains thujone, a potent antiseptic and antibiotic, which fights against common viruses, bacteria and fungi to assist your bodys immune system and help you recover faster. #herbalmedicine #holistichealth #thepowerofplants #immunesystem

YOGA BOOSTS IMMUNITY - stress lowers it! (articles linked at bottom*) Doctors, media, and officials are all busy telling us how to hide from COVID- but we havent heard much about ways to optimize our bodys natural ability to fight off the virus.... Well, youre in luck. Increasing your immune systems functionality can be surprisingly easy and effective. Rather than draining mental health with fear and solitude, yoga practice is designed to reconnect you with your heart while balancing mind and body. "Psychological stress can impact many systems in the body, including weakening the immune system." -Marlynn Wei M.D., J.D., in Psychology Today* "Yoga helps lower stress hormones that compromise the immune system" -Yoga Journal* The Pranayam (breath), Asana (postures), mantras (chanting) and meditation practices we offer at Prana all serve to steady your mind and calm your nervous system by directing your awareness to the present. This reduces the leakage of vital energy that occurs when stress, anxiety or depression consume your mind/nervous system. Doctors are known to prescribe "regulated breath" practices to ease anxiety- lowering cortisol levels and down-regulating the amygdala (anxiety center of the brain).* In addition, Doctors frequently recommend physical exercise to combat depression. As said in this* WebMD Article: "Depression can affect the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight infection." Exercise (like asana practice) releases endorphins or "happy hormones". Most immune cells have endorphin receptors and rely on endorphins to function properly. Endorphins stimulate the immune system by activating white blood cells to help protect us against disease and infection. Meditation and mantra also both activate the release of endorphins, along with serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. As Osho has said about the vital impacts of these practices, "The practice of meditation will have many physiological results too. Some physical diseases can disappear, longevity can increase, and many chemical changes can take place in the body. Numerous glands of the body that are at the moment as good as dead can be activated."* Join us at Prana Yoga Studio to experience the subtle or spectacular impacts of Yoga on your mind, emotions, body, and their direct connection to your immune system: https://www.pranayogastudio.ca/schedule/ Sources: https://www.psychologytoday.com//new-research-how-yoga-boo https://www.washingtonpost.com//07c73756-6d36-11ea-a3ec-70 https://www.webmd.com/dep/how-depression-affects-your-body https://www.goodtherapy.org//feeling-good-yet-seven-ways-t https://www.deccanchronicle.com//mystic-mantra-active-medi https://www.yogajournal.com/life/support-your-immune-system
