Ever wonder what the differences between archaeology, paleontology, and geology are? Look no further! Here on PEI we often interchange the terms archaeology and paleontology, but really they aren't interchangeable, and actually refer to very specific studies of science that usually don't overlap. Here's why: Archaeology - the study of past humans, their civilizations and cultures... Paleontology - the study of the history of ALL life on Earth, excluding humans. Macroscopic (LARGE) life has been on Earth for about 600 million years, but humans have only been here for about 275,000 years. That leaves 599.725 million years of animal life and evolution that needs to be studied. An easy way to remember: Archaeologists - Humans Paleontologists - No humans Archaeologists/anthropologists - last 1 million years Paleontologists - older than 1 million years There is a bit of overlap between the two when it comes to studying the last ice age, as ancient extinct animals like mammoths lived alongside humans as recent as 3,000 years ago. However here on PEI paleontology and archaeology really don't have any overlap. Prehistoric Island Tours focuses solely on paleontology and geology, because our bedrock preserves ancient landscapes that existed here 300 million years ago! We hear the term archaeology quite often on the Island because we have a fantastic archaeology department with the province of PEI and many amazing archaeological sites. Now I'm going to confuse you more. There is no geology department with the province, so if you find a fossil of significance you must contact the archaeology department and your find will be put into great hands. That means, if you find an artefact OR a fossil of PEI, you contact the same people: the archaeology department. Take some pictures of your find, leave it where it is, and email [email protected]. If you hear a friend refer to fossils as the study of archaeology, maybe just give them a gentle reminder that it is actually the study of paleontology. It really does help to eliminate the confusion around the two!
