Today I'd like to talk about how we over seed our client's lawns to improve density and add that dark green colour that everybody loves! I'll also show you how to do it at home! Over Seeding is the process of adding new grass seed to existing grass. Here is a step by step guide. Step 1: Mow The Lawn (2-2.5 inches)... - Its okay if your lawn looks a little brown after this - its supposed to. Step 2: Dethatch The Lawn - Dethatchers remove thatch build up and improve your soil's ability to accept nutrients and airflow. Step 3: Core Aeration - Aeration removes plugs of soil and puts them up on top of the surface of the lawn - letting them break down to give us some top dressing on the yard. Aeration also opens up the yard to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate down into the root zone of the grass. Step 4: Seeding - Add your seed right over top of the existing lawn. Make sure you use a broadcast or rotary spreader (we prefer rotary for larger areas) to spread the seed evenly. Always read the directions on the bag of seed to know what setting to put your spreader at. Step 5: Starter Fertilizer - Starter fertilizer is great for new seed because it contains more phosphorous. Extra phosphorous gives us better root growth and gives grass seed a boost to get itself established. Allow for 3-5 days between seeding and starter fertilizer because you want to give the grass a chance to take in the soil. Step 6: Watering - Watering is the most important step with all seeding. - Keep your lawn wet and don't let it dry out. Try not to put so much water on the lawn that you see puddles - 10-15 minutes per section 2-3 times per day is generally a good rule. Best times for watering your lawn are mid morning (11am), mid afternoon (3pm), and early evening (7pm). Step 7: Mowing - Wait 10-14 days before your first mow - but don't let it get too long (no more than 3.5 inches). Allowing the lawn to grow to 5 or 6 inches will prevent new grass from getting sunlight and stunt growth! Use a sharp blade on a rotary mower and try not to be on the lawn as much as you can. Be gentle with it! Consistent regular mowing helps the lawn thicken up. Step 8: 2nd Application of Fertilizer & Weed Control - Use either starter fertilizer or regular fertilizer for this one. Wait 4 weeks before adding this round of fertilize (after one or two mows). If you have weeds popping up don't stress! The whole point of over seeding is to make your lawn more dense which will allow the lawn to naturally choke out weeds. Regular Weed B' Gone or something over the counter is great and just target the weeds you can see! Step 9: Enjoy Your Success - Over seeding might sound a bit daunting at first, but if you follow these steps, you will have a much improved lawn going into the summer!
