Last week the AECEO received this beautiful and heartbreaking open letter from an Early Childhood Educator, and we feel privileged to share it. So many of thes...e ideas and feelings resonated strongly with us, and we're very grateful to the educator who chose to share these words. An open letter to my fellow ECEs Today we were told that schools would now be open on May 4th. We watched condolences and sympathy for all of the teachers and all of the students who attended K-12. That’s great, they definitely needed it and 100% deserved it. But where was ours, where were the condolences and empathy for the children who attended child care and for the educators who miss them. Why were we not important enough to be addressed personally, why were we instead a ticker that went under Doug Ford’s name. What about our last goodbyes to the children we may never see again as they leave for the summer before going to Kindergarten, or the children who were getting ready to move up to the next room and we never got to prepare ourselves with visits. I am an ECE in Ontario who is grieving the possible loss of the children in my program as they move on to bigger and better things. I am grieving all of the St.Patricks and Easter activities that never will be and fear that the Mother’s Day crafts and summer activities will be on this list as well. I am grieving all of the lost time with my tiny humans and watching how excited they are that they are almost big enough for big school. I am an ECE in Ontario who is feeling a loss and I should be respected enough to have that acknowledge by Doug Ford and Stephen Lecce. So for all my fellow ECEs I am so sorry that you are dealing with this, it is okay to feel sad about this because at the end of the day it is a really sad situation. For all the ECEs who secretly used to wish for a snow day here and there (we all know we have) do not feel guilty and instead take the time to do some workshops, perfect your craft and come back better then you ever have before. Because when we do get back we will appreciate our jobs and the tiny people who make up our day in ways we never would have expected. To all my tiny humans and my wonderful families I miss you more then you probably know and I am so sorry that you are going through something so much bigger then you should have to deal with. Sincerely An early childhood educator
