Saskatchewan’s COVID burden is improving, but provincial numbers don’t tell the whole story. For instance - sizeable drops in urban areas hide increasing case r...ates in small towns. This post is a deeper dive into all 32 regions and five age groups so you can be better informed if you are considering seeing family in the next few days. Not everyone will make the safest choice, but the better informed you are, the SAFER your choices will be. Before I get to the numbers I’ll remind you of this: Most spread across Canada right now is in private home gatherings. It’s one asymptomatic or presymptomatic person spreading COVID to friends and family through talking, visiting and eating together. The safest choice is to celebrate apart, but if you can’t do that you can still wear masks, increase your distance, run an air purifier, crack a window, shorten your visit and more. Ages: Right now there has been a good drop in incidence of new infections in all age groups EXCEPT the 20-39’s. They are continuing to get infected ~1.5X more than 0-19, 40-59 and 80+ and ~2.5X more than 60-79. Young adults, please be extra cautious. You are more likely to be asymptomatic and spread to older relatives. Zone Breakdown I’m going to discuss trends for test positivity for each of the 13 zones, and incidence for all 32 subzones. The higher the positivity, the more likely we are not detecting cases. Incidence is the rate of spread of new cases. Provincially test positivity is 7.7% right now, down from a peak of 9% on Dec 12th (under 5% is ideal to prevent from missing cases) and incidence is 17.8, down from our peak of 23.8 on Dec 12th (under 5 is ideal to relax restrictions). If you skip the nitty gritty details The Far North and North are doing poorly compared to most of the province with additional increasing hotspots in CE2, CE3 & CE5. Far North: With the smallest population FNC sees big jumps up or down. Positivity is quite high in all areas and has not improved all month. Incidence very high across the Far North, ranging between 30 and 71. North: Positivity is higher than provincial avg with NW the highest at nearly 19% followed by NC at 13.1% and NE at 12%. Only NE3 & NE1 have below avg incidence. NC1 is dropping slowly, NC2 is high and consistent, NC3 is going up, NE1 has dropped 50% since Dec 11th, NE2 and NE3 are increasing. NW1 and NW2 are extremely high and increasing. NW3 and NW4 are coming down, but still high. Central: CW has a positivity of 3.8% and stable. CE is 6.7% and increasing. Incidence in CE1 and CE4 is quite low. CE3 and CE5 are increasing to the provincial average. CE2 is higher than average, fluctuating up and down, but has increased quite a bit since new restrictions were put in place. South: SC has been consistent all month and sits at 4.1% positivity. SE is at 3.1% and dropping. SW is at 4.2% and is a third of what it was at the start of December. For incidence SC1 dipped to mid-month but is increasing, but still under half the provincial average at 7.2. SC2 appears to be on the decline at 6.5. SE1 was high early December but is down to 6.5, SE2 hit a peak a week ago and has dropped to 9.3. SE3 is the only zone in the province with no new cases and an incidence of zero, closely followed by SE4 at the low levels of 0.9. SW1 has dropped substantially from the start of the month to 2.3, and so has SW2 which sits at 6.1. Saskatoon and Regina: Regina’s positivity has halved from a couple weeks ago to sit at 5.1%, Saskatoon is also coming down and sits at 7.3%. Both cities have halved incidence as well with Regina at 13.7 from a peak of 28.9 this month. Saskatoon is at 14.6 from a peak of 30.2 nearly 3 weeks ago. As both cities have large populations the lack of granular detail can hide hotspots within each city. So that's it, please make informed decisions and remember to make safer choices, whatever they may be. Happy Holidays!
