Workplace today: Karma Changchub Ling monastery has just moved to Halifax and their thangkas travelled safely- flat not rolled! In this image a thangka just arr...ived and, is being released from its light travel supporting board and ready to hang up in their new meditation hall. Did you know that rolling up your thangka can crush the delicate paint layers and crease and tear the textile mounting? We are no longer travelling on yaks, and these blessed and beautiful thangkas traveled safely, flat on their supporting boards, in community members' cars. When we pack like this, we add a layer of soft cloth between the cover and the painting for extra protection from abrasion. Today, dear friends Lis and Peter visited to say goodbye to the Padmasambhava thangka that I re-created before it is de-constructed. I raised the cover for them... on the original textile thangka mounting from the early 1960s in India, to reveal the print that was placed in the textile mounting for this project. The original painting is in storage, framed in a western style mat and frame. Before his death, the artist expressed his wish for the thangka to remain in its original complete form. Reconstructing the original full thangka form of Padmasambhava painting by using its original textile mounting from India, and inserting a print of the painting....
