In recent years, the focus has been on militarizing our domestic police forces, increasing their firepower and weaponry. Does anyone recall being given the impression as a small child that a police officer was a friendly, approachable, known and trusted member of the community? When exactly did that change? Police are granted special powers by the community and along with those powers, there are obligations. Rights and duties are handed over to these specific people so that they can serve and protect the community. There is no other reason. All police forces should be concentrating on ensuring that all police officers are trained to de-escalate situations, not show up guns a-blazing because all of their training is premised on an "attack" mentality.
